Happy Monday fellow UACers! As November is winding down let’s strive to stay strong with our goals, especially as some of us are heading into a holiday weekend.
The secret of our success in this challenge is to meet its 3 requirements every day.
Or rather, to phrase it differently, we just need to remain CONSISTENT!

I know the fear of flying thing was part of yesterday’s discussion but I wanted to respond to it here so maybe it would reach everyone possible. I was married to an airline pilot (American) for 32 years, we owned 3 private planes, and I worked as the manager of a municipal airport. I say that to establish that I have lots of experience with planes and flying. Fear of flying is such a legit thing and even for people like me, there’s a certain amount of trepidation every time I get on one. You’ve probably all heard the statistics regarding how much safer getting on a plane is than getting in your car. But I also know that doesn’t help when faced with getting on that plane. So I want to throw out 2 suggestions, take them or leave them, but they might help a little.
- Talk to the pilots. My ex was really good talking to nervous flyers. Pre 9/11 he could take people into the cockpit and explain things. I’m guessing that’s not possible anymore, but most of them are more than happy to do what they can to reassure a passenger. Unfortunately, the post-Covid environment seems to have brought out the worst in people and the crew at this point may be so wary of unruly passengers that they may not have the time, but it’s worth a try.
- This one may sound crazy, but sign up for ground school at a local flight school. They are often offered free of charge. You’ll learn all the things a person has to know in order to earn a private pilots license without ever getting in a plane. Sometimes learning how everything works can provide some amount of confidence. It’s amazing what pilots do before ever taking off, and how much maintenance and care go into making sure planes are airworthy. Honestly, if we all took care of our cars the way a pilot takes care of the plane, we’d be driving our cars for 400,000 miles.
My husband will spend his life explaining why my fear of snakes is unreasonable. While I have made progress, I’m going to be scared of snakes every single time no matter how sweet and innocent that snake may be. But I have to face that fear and try to manage it or else that fear will prevent me from hiking and biking some of the places I want to go. I’ll be in Arizona in February and I have a knot in my stomach thinking about rattlesnakes, but I cannot let that keep me from hiking and biking trails.
So…enough about this. None of this will likely help anyone really crippled with fear, but based on my aviation history I thought it might be worth mentioning.11 -
@biketheworld I am married to a former aviation electrician the stress of knowing if the helicopter or jet didn't make it made him almost lose his stuff. By the age of 28 he had an ulcer so yes the ground crew does take their jobs very seriously. He now works on the robots that make delivery vans. He says he is not directly responsible for peoples lives so that works for him.6

I get nervous getting to the airport and at the airport but as soon as I get on the plane and sit down I feel relief. I can just sit and relax and meditate 😌

Does anyone else but me miss the little red bell notifications that there are new posts in discussions you are following since the change over. I can see it on my PC but not on my phone. Navigation seems a lot more awkward. I see a lot less Bboard activity also everywhere.5 -

regarding aeroplanes - I've spent quite a few years of my life designing them. They are very safe. The systems are designed to be fail safe and can take multiple failures before anything bad will happen, this is measured in failures per billion hours. Each time there is an incident, which is very rare, the design teams of all aircraft get to see the cause and then the systems are updated to ensure that failure can never happen again. I think there are something like one hundred thousand flights a day and we hear of an incident maybe once every 3 or 4 years which means the chances of each disaster are many tens of millions to one. If all else fails I would think that the pilot does this job day in day out and he has made it this far so the chances of him killing me is pretty remote :-) The most dangerous part of a flight by many orders of magnitude is driving the car to the airport :-) It really is, If you make arrive safely after the most dangerous part of the journey you will be ok for the remainder of it.5 -

Thanks for the insights about airplanes; I appreciate them as an avid traveler who still panics during long flights.

Exercise: more than 25 minutes walking exergame. 6615 steps on the day.
Logging: everything.
In Goal: had an afternoon snack, then shorted the evening snack to keep just under 100 exercise calories uneaten (shorter set of steps, so less exercise calories available to work with.)
I am trying to shift more calories into a planned and variable afternoon snack, so that less is left for after-supper air popped popping corn (tends to be my default evening snack).
