Happy Monday fellow UACers! I have an awful tendency to put my UAC goals on hold when I get stressed out. It's time for me to work on self-discipline. The reality is there is always another stressor around the corner; such is life. If I'm ever going to get anywhere with this program, I need to keep going. This will be my daily affirmation for the rest of February:

Thank you for the topic @Jana_2020
First, I just googled for the definition of “self-discipline”
“Self-discipline is the ability to push yourself forward, stay motivated, and take action, regardless of how you're feeling, physically or emotionally. ...”.
Easy to say “push yourself forward… regardless of how you're feeling”.
Then, I looked for the tools and came across the following article: 8 Powerful Ways to Cultivate Extreme Self-Discipline. Actually, nothing new. But I liked some quotes
“The first and best victory is to conquer self.” ~ PLATO
“I can resist anything except temptation.” ~ OSCAR WILDE.
I think I personally will start with this step 2 of building self-discipline, i.e., STEP TWO: Remove temptations. It seems to be the easiest and doable.
I post the link in case someone decides to have a look

Sorry but just another quote: "It may be hard to believe when you’re facing an all-you-can-eat buffet, the prospect of making a quick buck, or the lazy lure of sleeping in versus getting on the Peloton, but studies show that people with self-discipline are happier. Why? Because with discipline and self-control we actually accomplish more of the goals we truly care about." I believe this is true ... And you?9

why do we have to have discipline? I prefer to call them good habits. Most folks when they feel they HAVE to do something (which discipline implies to me) are less likely to do that thing than if they want to do it instead or it has become an engrained habit.
Of course we all approach things and have different semantics. But discipline alone is not going to ensure success. As a matter of fact I tend to dislike the word because it implies things are difficult. Let's make things easy if we can.
Do I run every morning because I have discipline or because I have a habit engrained?7 -
Thanks for this opener Jana and for the article you shared Svetlana @Jana_2020 @Winner_in_Life The article really made me think, and I appreciate that.
I totally agree with you @summerskier and I personally have the same reaction to “discipline”.
I’ve been reading a lot about habits recently and am currently doing the free James Clear 30 Days to Better Habits email course. That shift in thinking is still underway for me, but it has been helpful. Obligation, requirement, “discipline”, mandatory, and other words have a different impact on each of us - and to each their own. If it works for you — go for it! 🌟
For me, my goals and habits are now always set in a positive wording, and they support the identity I want to manifest (rather than using only goals and habits that are performance based). It is really helping me.
What is also helping is these posts in our UAC group, and everyone’s sharing. Even if we don’t always agree — it prompts a thoughtful consideration, and isn’t that exactly what we all need to be doing to ensure we are both on the best path, and that our success is sustainable? Well, it is for me.
Wishing everyone a terrific day today 🥰4 -
Why do I run?🤔 Habit? Rather because I love it and it makes me feel good. Maybe this "feeling good" is the key to building "habits", "discipline" or whatever.8
-
I almost think what starts as self-discipline turns into habits for me.
I agree that when I've made something a habit it no longer feels like self-discipline because it's so ingrained that I'm doing it naturally.
However, at that point I've usually switched focus - my now habits are left to run and my self-discipline reserves are re-deployed to another area I want to work on.
No matter how we get there, it takes intentional living to meet your goals. Thanks for the great opener and discussion.11 -
So many great thoughts on today's topic, I love it! Thank you @Jana_2020 for the lively opener!
Spoiler for me being a big old blabber-head todayI know that every time I have set out on new health goals, for me it starts with the discipline of making myself do the things I set out to do. It helps if I either get some sort of enjoyment out of doing it, or enjoy some reward from having done it. Otherwise if there was no benefit I probably wouldn't continue to make myself do it.
That said, once I get things going and have been enjoying those benefits, then it becomes a lot easier to do as part of my regular routine. It's never easy trying to figure out how to fit things in at first, and adjust whatever you need to adjust in life to make it happen, but it gets easier, even routine!
On the other side of this is the "slippery slope" of breaking habits. For any of an almost infinite number of reasons you might start missing the mark or temporarily have to stop some of these habits. Then the momentum goes the other way and you have to work at it again to get back on track.
I think running, for people who never really ran prior, is a great example (probably only because I've experienced that, there's probably countless better examples). Let's face it, when you start running for the first time ever, or after coming back from a hiatus...it sucks. It sucks the next day, and depending on your training load it might have oodles of suckyness all around with some frequency.
A rite of passage for new runners who proudly achieved running for that first full mile, and are trying to build up that first 5k is to ponder, and sometimes inquire here on MFP...How the ever-loving-*kitten* am I EVER going to run a whole 5k when just this first mile or two sucks so freaking hard I just want to die, in fact you may as well just kill me now this sucks more than the absolute vacuum of freaking space.
I can already hear the question...But you said you need to get some enjoyment out of what you are doing, so where is the enjoyment in suffering through all that running?
When a runner stops running for a while, for whatever reason, an interesting thing happens. The running that they found so enjoyable just absolutely sucks again! And while they used to go out and crank out a 5k on any given moment without much of a thought, now their legs literally want to fall right off before they have even hit that first mile. But having been through it before helps one to know the benefit of sticking with it.
I think that applies to the development of any habits, just with variances on which parts suck, which parts are the rewards, and the degree of difficulty re-establishing the habit.7 -

Thanks for the topic @Jana_2020.
I grew up in a household where discipline was discussed constantly. Success meant you’d shown discipline, failure meant you hadn’t. It was an obsession. It was currency.
Whether that gave me more of it who’s to say? I actually think it taught me ways to avoid having to rely on it. So I try to foster an environment where I have a high level of motivation and can learn and practice good habits. I would rather exercise choice than resort to force.6 -

I can’t say that I agree with the blanket statement that “without self-discipline success is impossible” because sometimes you can succeed without really trying. I suppose it partly depends on your definition of “success”.
I have two sisters, we have very different personalities and problems. I was very successful at school up to age 17 partly due to an innate ability (lucky there) combined with a willingness to sit quietly in class and do what I was asked to do. One sister was rebellious and hated school, and had other issues to deal with, the other sister was dyslexic and wasn’t diagnosed until quite late (and anyway it wasn’t well understood back in the 60’s). So, neither of my sisters were as successful at school, but I couldn’t attribute my success to self-discipline, nor their lack of success to lack of self-discipline. (Both of them have proved themselves to be perfectly capable of succeeding in life after school.)
However, I am a procrastinator and it’s possible that actually I would be happier if I just got things done instead of putting them off and feeling harassed and guilty. I need to work on that!

You can’t be successful without truly loving yourself. From that place of deep caring, you can then skip the buffet easily, or run daily, or eat less food. It’s coming from a place of truly wanting what is best for ourselves.
Yes, my habits are habits.. and yes they began as small changes that took discipline. And the habits improved over time.
But now in the middle of my 4th year of maintenance, I am shifting to an increasingly healthier diet because I deeply know how lucky I am to be on the planet & I love my body enough to take care of it❤️
So, I make gradual changes - why shock my beloved body?
I eat foods that make me feel great and provide the nutrients my body needs - really, why wouldn’t we do this?
I walk every day because I have learned to love it & I’ve seen how it improves my life. Recently I connected it to my art practice - why not make it as enjoyable as we can & make ourselves filled up with as much goodness as we can.
We can craft the life we’ve dreamed of living!

Self-discipline, Budgets, self-control.... are some words people tends to resist or look at negatively. What is always interesting to me is how people take a lot of effort to justify their actions (the ones that work against them).
I have decided to take time to justify the things that work for my health. These are my motivating factors.- I never want to be Fat again!
- The price of living a fat life is too expensive (clothes, shoes, food, etc., etc.).
- My clothes are now cheaper, food more enjoyable, my food items last longer. No guilt the next day.
- The discomfort OMG that comes from being fat (easily exhausted, slow motion/movement, constantly, out of breath, pains, etc., etc.)
- The effect of "fat life style" on Health..... I won't even go there
Compare to what I have now.... I will do everything to maintain this present life style. I have cheated myself enough! NO MORE!
Therefore, I will form as many habits as possible to replace every bad one I ever had. Self-discipline changes to self-love.

Exercise: yes, 20 minutes treadmill, 15 min walk outside. Fitbit said 75 active minutes.
Tracking: tracked everything, even when I didn't want to face the fact that I had 3 pieces of mini valentines candies and a individual size bag of doritos. That added up to 280 calories that I could have saved today. Drat!
Calories: yes, still under my goal. I did a little extra exercise to help even out the snacking. Still having sugar cravings........ 🤬

@Winner_in_Life Tysm for sharing the great article and quotes. Very insightful and motivating!
Lucky you @SummerSkier Unfortunately a habit for me requires a bit of 'butt-kicking' to get me to do something consistently. Eventually they will become habits for me. Or perhaps I'm picking the wrong habits then lol.
@jamcnewman Ty for your insights. I really like "support the identity I want to manifest". That's a keeper, it may be my next monthly mantra.
Ty @ashleycarole86 That's exactly how I function. I really liked your comment "it takes intentional living to meet your goals". I'm saving that one also to reference for motivation when I'm struggling. Ty for that
Ty for your support @WhatMeRunning I always find your "big old blabber-head" comments chock full of wisdom & encouragement!
@Arc2Arc Ty for your insights also. Unfortunately I need a bit of tough self-love; having a high level of motivation goes out the window quickly for me when I get distracted by life's stresses.
Always full of wisdom too @MadisonMolly2017. I do struggle with loving myself. I'm really working on my negative thoughts and insecurities. Lately I have a lot of rage going on too; I'm trying to work through that. Idk if it's hormonal; I had a phase of that when I first went into menopause. Ty for that very insightful post
@victorious55 Tysm for your inspiring post I loved it all but especially the phrase "self discipline changes to self love"! I'm also writing down your 5 reasons for justifying your health. You can look at it as a way of reframing negatives into positives which is something I need to work on soon as well.
I really didn't foresee this being such a thoughtful discussion. I just thought I'd share what the next monthly mantra is that I"m working on and leave the content light and undemanding as we head into a new month. However it ended up being yet another helpful day of the group sharing our insights and wisdom; just another display of why our group is so awesome!
Yes x 3 for me today!

The cold snap has ended! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 I celebrated with Beauregard by taking an 80 minute outdoor walk through our beautiful urban park around the lake. The sunny and warm day meant some really icy patches and lots of puddles, so I was glad to have my IcyTraxx on my Sorels. Beau enjoyed lots of bounding in deep snow and that sure was a workout for us both!

Calories ✅ Very under and got the red warning from MFP. Gastro issues are worse tonight and after a hot shower, I am in bed early with the heating pad. Tomorrow will be better.
Exercise ✅ 84 minutes of exercise; 13,000+ steps.
