Supplements - Should I be Taking Any?

I have a couple questions.

1. I am having a hard time getting enough protein without going over on my fat and sodium for the day. I do use Hemp protein for fruit shakes now and then, but I don't drink them every day. Should I be taking a protein supplement (powder) regularly?

2. Are there other supplements I should be taking, like L-Glutamine?

    Hi there!

Well it is up to you, if you like to supplement with a protein powder or not.
I personally do not like them very much, so I just use them occasionally and try to get my protein from food
But if you feel, it is the only way to hit your macros, then there is nothing wrong in supplementing
Just watch out for a powder, that is not full of chemicals. The less ingredients, the better.

Thank you for your response. I think I'll put more of an effort in getting enough from my food, with an occasional protein drink.
  • I use whey protein just because I don't want to have to eat more to get the protein in (I feel like I eat enough already and can't fathom adding even more meals!) and also, buying that much chicken would be expensive. It's really down to personal preference though. I enjoy the ease of protein powder, and if I have the chocolate flavour it's like having a sweet treat.

As for other supplements, I don't take any except for a multivitamin once a day. I read an interesting article not long ago written by Medhi from Stronglifts about supplements, you might find it interesting: http://stronglifts.com/12-strength-training-supplements-dissected/

I try to get most of my protein (108g/day) by eating it but depending on my meals for the day it's a little hard so I add .5-1 scoop of protein powder (vitasport pro7ein - 153cals/34g of protein) in with my breakfast or afternoon snack. I try not to add my protein powder into my diet later than that because it tends to upset my tummy if I don't give it time to digest. Also too much whey protein can be hard on my stomach as well so if I have say 1 full scoop/day for 3 days in a row I may try and take a day or two break. I could probably try and switch to a soy protein or a vegetable based protein but they tend to be higher in caloire and lower in g of protein.

I tried taking a proboitic to help with digestion but that didn't seem to help, to each his/her own :)
