We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Topic: Casseroles, of any type. Do you partake of them or participate in preparing them? If you don't prepare them Do you find it difficult figuring out the points/Kcals?

I typically overeat with Casseroles. Many of them I like but if I have a choice I will try to avoid them like ground beef and various other types of meaty Casseroles. This also goes along with other blended Casseroles like Chicken Alfredo, or some of the other saucy italian dishes as well. Do I like them? Yes their just not point or calorie friendly unless I make them myself.

I like casseroles or other one-dish meals. I generally can get a good estimate of calories by either weighing (preferred method) or guesstimating (as I've written before, I'm not very good at this) the amount. If I'm tracking food intake, casseroles are like anything else I eat, and if I track I stay within my daily calorie quota.

love many different kinds of casseroles, but tracking and high points values can be a problem. Note that with many casseroles its the topping or shell that is the high points item, so when I am on plan I can try to eat the contents but not the shell

I generally break down the composite parts of casseroles, estimating the serving size of each, and tracking that way. It's a PIA for many, but it works best for me. It's also not as exact as I usually like, but as Charlie indicated in a previous post, getting close consistently will eventually get you where you want to go (paraphrased).

Most of what I make that would be considered casseroles are slow-cooker meals based on a recipe. I don’t have an issue with overeating because once it’s made, I’ll allocate the portions - two on plates right now for dinner, two in plastic containers for later in the week, and two in plastic containers in the freezer for another time. Obviously, I know the points and the portions because I’ve packaged them that way.

We don't do many, if any, true casseroles. We do a lot of one pot meals, my version of the WW Chili Mac, and stews. Most are made as a one meal deal. We are both volume eaters, so lots of low calorie/point foods into the various pots.

Not on my menu. Fact is that things that have built in counting gray areas were eliminated long ago.
