We meet here to explore, share, celebrate and (sometimes) agonize over how we do (or don't) incorporate weight loss guidelines into our daily lives. "It's a lifestyle, not a diet" is easily and often said, but sometimes not so simply put into practice.

This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Sugar? or Artificial Sweetners. Adding sugar to drinks and various other things has its questions health wise and sweetners have their concerns health wise.

Where do you stand using either and if it's artificial sweetners what your choice?

I mainly used sweet n low mainly because it's been around for 100 years and saccharin has had its share of controversy. I've been using it for over 50 years but do try to limit my use of it. I like it because there seems to be no after taste and I generally like it best. Except for Stevie I do my best to steer clear of all the other sweetners for one reason or another.
DW and I most of the time don't even have sugar in the house and sometimes I use a bit of honey to sweeten up something. I figure I get my share of sugar in things I'm not suppose to eat anyway and we all know what this items are.

Overall when it comes to drinks plain filtered water is my choice. I have a home water filter that I keep water stored in appropriate containers and I keep a water bottle with me everywhere I go all day.

I mostly use artificial sweeteners (Splenda, mainly). I figure the caloric saving outweighs potential risks.

When I use a sweetener it is almost always artificial. This helps me stay below 25 grams of aded sugar. Costco sells industrial sized boxes of Splenda, so I use that

I use what is available. Honey is my favorite. Mostly, though, I don't use a sweetener at all.

So does BJ's Wholesale a club, so I buy the 1200 pack there. I used to use Equal, but Splenda seems to dissolve better in cold beverages like iced tea, which is what I drink when I dine out. For cooking, I use real sugar because the recipes don’t turn out the same with Splenda. And I use a tablespoon of real sugar to treat hiccups - and since the use is medicinal, I treat it as zero points.

And like Steve, I think the risks associated with being overweight are greater than the risks associated with Splenda. I’m sure there’s a study on that somewhere, probably funded by Dow Chemical . . . . 🤷‍♂️

I’ve got the Costco Splenda box. And I’m addicted to Diet Coke.

I usually get store (Market Basket up here) brand of Splenda. I used to be addicted to Diet Coke but now limit myself to 3 per day. I drink a lot of sparkling waters (not seltzer) with a bit of flavor.
