New to group but not to diabetes

Just came across this group - so am new to the group but not to diabetes.

I see this is a large group - not sure how many people are actually participating.

I notice that there is no 'chat room' where we can just chat - seems everyone one is just posting a new discussion when they come. Honestly find that difficult as it means looking over many discussions.

Is there anyway that there could be a Chat Room where we could ask or share and then if there is general information that would be good to share have that put in a thread of its own.

Would like to hear from the leaders of the group about this - if I can be of help let me know.

As I mentioned not new to diabetes - have been type 2 for about 10 years now. And now I have developed kidney problems. Have been gathering lots of information and how to eat with diabetes and low kidney function as I don't want to go into diaylis failure - have learned that the diabetes can be reversed and Chronic Kidney Disease can be slowed down and even improved with some change.

Anyway would like to hear from the leaders of this group as to whether a chat room can be made up and if they need any help with 'leading' the group

I am not sure about chat room functionality. I would personally not be too likely to use it, but it might be popular.

I was diagnosed with T2 in 2016. I got off meds with diet. I am still T2, but have found a way to manage the BG numbers.

    Happy to hear from you!

Thanks for responding to my question. I guess I am just overwhelmed at all the different threads to read. I am used to having one thread where everyone posts then you can keep up todate on the one thread

Here is another question: Is there anyone here how has Chronic Kidney Disease because of the Diabetes. If so how are they treating it.

The threading organizes them into subject matter. Depending on the level of participation, I can see a benefit to a single thread. The problem is if your question about test strips or something gets buried 25 messages down.

I hope someone weighs in on the Chronic Kidney Disease. I know nothing about it.

Could a thread be made up for 'questions' then all questions would be in one thread and you would just scroll down to the one you asked.

As for the Chronic Kidney Disease don't think many people with diabetes even think about it and never question it when getting blood work - but they should. Mine came as a surprise all because though I was eating fairly well controlling my diabetes was getting to much salt and now I am paying the consequences. Yes it would be nice if others would join me even to learn and discuss how to take care of the kidneys when dealing with diabetes.

Create a questions thread! We can see how it works.

Is the Chronic Kidney Disease basically a consequence of high blood pressure? I know my doctor always checks some metric with my kidneys and tells me things are fine, so maybe he is doing the test.

Chronic Kidney disease is from obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and high blood pressure - all are things to get control of other wise you damage the kidneys. I thought I had all of those under control, though blood work was done was never told to beware of what they can do to the kidneys. I know have low kidney function and it is not nice. Am sitting here right not with pain and not knowing if it is a kidney infection, start of kidney stones or something else. Going to the emergency is not an option due to the long wait - if I went I would be there 5 - 8 hours before looked at - so waiting to see if I can get ahold of my doctor on Monday - not nice as I am not sure if it is my kidney causing problem or if it is back problem - all this brings on stress / anxiety - and all because I did not work to (1) control the weight (2) exercise daily (3) drink enough water, (4) eat for diabetes control watching for sodium and cholesterol levels. I have found most diabetics don't look at those numbers in the food they eat. Doc always said my food look ok - but now my cholesterol is to high, kidneys are low function and I am having to deal with it.

It does not sound like something you want to have. I wonder if the newer generation of doctors is more aware of all this. I never heard a peep about it from my last doctor. The new one talks to me about kidney function numbers.

I am so grateful that my doctor is really up to date with all of this stuff. He is a very busy doctor as most of them here are (so many of them are so stressed due to the lack of doctors and nurses here) and he is so great helping me to keep my stress and anxiety at a lower level. With all that is happening in world the anxiety can run amuck for sure.

No Kidney Disease is not something a person would want - not sure where you are and if this is available but when we get blood work done we can look on to a website and get the result for our records. My doctor always asks if I would like a copy but now that I have access to the website I just print it up from there. So I can see all the things they test and whether some are high or low (there is an H or a L beside if they are out of range) so when I go for a 'visit' I can ask him about it should he miss telling me about it.

This group is rather quiet - everyone must be handling their diabetes well and therefore not needing to come and say hi - was hope that since this was / is a support group that there would be more interaction but guess it is only when a question comes up that people post - at leas that looks like what is happening. Anyway good to be here

    Glad you are here too.

I have number posted on a web site where I can log in with my account and see them. I get the blood draw and all a week before my appointment, so he has the numbers when I see him and I can ask about things if I have a concern. I have an appointment coming up in a couple of weeks.

@2t9nty sorry about my new thread that says 'not to leader' was meant to read 'note to leader' - is there anyway you could add me on as an additional leader as it seems you are the only leader posting anything. Would like to help out with the group if possible

    Hi Marilyn.
I started on your chat room, but \I have to say, all those 'inspirational' pictures got too much for me. I would much rather see other peoples stories and successes(or failures).

Thanks for the comment re the inspirational pictures - I enjoy them but am not going to post any more here - I was posting them as I thought it might start up some discussions - we are a quiet group - sure would be nice if this group was more active - or am I the only one dealing with diabetes and other issues - the diabetes has given me kidney failure and it now looks like diaylsis will be on the plate by the new year though I am hoping this will change.

I am off all meds except for kidney funtion as they were all damaging my kidneys - and my doctor has now said after 3 months no diabetic meds that my numbers are better without the meds than with them. I am following a plan that is plant based meaning I have really no animal protein (except that i will have a little chicken once / twice a week) otherwise all the protein is from beans, lentils and lots of vegetables.

Would be nice to hear from others on how they are dealing with diabetes and what their food looks like on any given day. For me I am having starch / carbs at every meal and my numbers have not been so good and am losing weight every week - 15 pounds lost in 2 months - so the way I am eating is working and according to the kidney specialist it is best to be plant based as she said most people eat to much animal protein that does affect the kidneys

Looking forward to this group getting more active

I am still staying the course with keto. I try to stay under 10 net carbs a day with a pretty hard limit of 20. This works well for me.

I am off diabetes meds. My A1C bounces around a little in the 5's from appointment to appointment. My doctor is happy with this and is very enthusiastic about the diet.

Breakfast is mostly eggs and bacon. Lunch is typically leftovers from the night before - today was a chicken leg quarter. Supper is usually some sort of meat that looked good and a leafy veggie or maybe broccoli/cauliflower. I make a champion cole slaw.

Your meals look interesting. I have had to cut out most animal protein due to my kidneys failing especially red meat. Should I have chicken I can only have no more than 2 oz which is not much at all. Also with the kidneys doing what they are doing I have to watch the fat I consume as even just a bit of butter and I get terribly sick. I can't have anything at with salt so no processed foods and have to use other spices to make things taste ok. But since I got out of the hospital on Sept 10 I have now just started eating meals again - from then till now it has mainly been oatmeal / eggs hard boiled / potatoes / and vegetables have had to be cooked and then blended and only about 3 - 4 oz if that in a day due to the fact that would get sick if I ate more. So am finding it a lot better with not being sick to stomach each day and able to get more vegetables

My A1C is in the low 5's also and my daily numbers in the morning are between 4.8 to 5.7 (that is Canadian numbers for USA numbers multiply that by 18) and that is with having a starch at each meal.

Look forward to others joining in the discussion
