estimating for dress size

OK, so here's the scoop. My step son is getting married November 1st. I had my bypass one month ago and am down 42 pounds (20 before and 22 since). I started out at a dress size 24, and am already down to an 18/20. What size dress should I order for the wedding??? I'm quite tall so will need to custom order to get the length and will need to order soon to get it in time. Hmmm. Any of you who have been through this, are around 5'10" tall, and started around 270 out there? I know there's no way to really predict, but I'm following all the rules and doing well so far. I must confess, I am excited about looking amazing in the pics!
Thanks ahead of time.

That's a hard one. I think the trouble for trying to estimate is that the sizes in those lower numbers tend to be more "vanity sized". When I was at my heaviest everything I tried in on a size 24 fit just about the same. Now that I am down to 190 lbs (from 315 and 5'6) I have clothes that are 10,12, 14, and 16 that all fit similarly. I might go and try them on, size too big, size too small and size just right to get an idea of how much change per size then order 1-2 sizes smaller. I would then plan on a tailor to make any adjustments if you end up too small for the fit.
It's such a wonderful problem to have, even if a little frustrating.

Do you have any choice in the style of dress? You could pick something more loose and flowy that could be tightened with a belt instead of something tailored that would have probably need to be customized close to the date of the wedding.0

That's a great idea too, but I tell you, now I love those more "tailored" looks with my new and improved smaller body.

Hi, I would wait as long as you can but if you can't order larger, they can always take it in (18)0

I would seriously consider buying off the rack for this. My sizing dropped so fast for the first 4 months. Then it stalled for a few months and dropped again. I started at a size 20 (plus) petite, by March (3 months out) I was wearing a size 10 pants. I now wear a size 4-6 petite. My one year anniversary from surgery will be 11/28.0

OK, the wedding was on Friday, and I had some fun on Monday. Back when I posted this I ended up buying a dress size 20 that was a bit snug, but not a really fitted style, and it had a belt so I thought I would just tighten it up, I continued with my wt loss and all the wedding planning. The dress still worked, but the armholes now seemed way too big, and it looked a little frumpy. I found out that one of the other Nordstroms in town had both a 18 and a 16 in stock. So I packed mine up, put on all the good support undergarments that I was going to wear and went to the store. Successfully traded the 20 for the 16, looked awesome, and got so many compliments. Lots of my relatives hadn't seen me since before I started losing, and I'm almost down 70 lb. Very nice victory! Thanks for all your good ideas as well as support these last few months.0

I am in the same kind of situation. I had surgery 3 weeks ago, and my brother is getting married mid December. I totally need a dress and I have no idea what size I will be by then. I will wait it out as long as I can!0

For me, a slightly raised waist (empire) works well, as LoNG as the boobs fit, and my bat wing arm skin is covered, it looks pretty good unfortunately my bra size decreased also, so it is a challenge. Good foundation garments and being comfortable makes me feel awesome. Don't forget shoe and jewelry sizes changed a lot also.0

Totally know what you mean about the armholes being too big! I just got rid of a bunch of tops/dresses that otherwise fit for exactly that reason
Glad you were able to trade in and look fabulous for your event.0
