Always like the beginning of a new month.
July ended well - lost 5.2 pounds with working through The McDougall Plan - was I 100% every day - no not at all but did have my lines I would not break. For instance one is absolutely no salt and another one is absolutely no processed foods.
August has started and I have goals set up - not just goals for food but for living. Here is what they are
1) Stay focused on the plan - what I SHOULD eat and take it one day at a time to do just that
2) don't fret about the scale - I weighed myself today, wrote the number down and now I am going to focus on eating nutriously by staying on the McDougall Plan taking it one day at a time - then the scale will go down.
3) Keep a food journal each day which consists of (a) food I will eat for the day (b) any exercise I have done starting with just a 10 minute walk (c) take my blood pressure/pulse and my blood sugars 1st thing every morning and record them so I can see the progress I am making (d) list all med's I take on the day that I am recording my food (e) list one thing I am grateful for that ay (f) write out a prayer to my Lord giving thanks to all that come to mind, praying for the world situation and for those who are sick and lastly asking for what I would consider a need/request (g) take out my Bible and write out a Scripture verse I read this morning and any study notes about it praying over the verse that I might apply it to my life
4) Have less computer / tv time and more time with my Lord in order that all areas of my life might improve
Food I have eaten today and will be eating for today is as follows
Breakfast (eaten at 8:30 am)
oatmeal with cinnamon and some applesauce ( no milk ) and 2 oranges that would weigh in at 6 oz total
Lunch (to be eaten at 12:30 pm)
Sandwich on 100% whole wheat bread with a little yellow mustard on each slice of bread that is toasted, then a couple slices of cucumber and a whole tomato sliced up. Served with a granny smith apple
Dinner (to be eaten at 5:30 pm)
Boiled potato ( am up to about 8 - 10 oz of boiled potato now) with a little garlic and/or onion powder on it, served with some homemade spaghetti sauce left over from last night. The sauce was made with ground chicken (because of my hubby's birthday), low sodium tomato sauce, low sodium stewed tomatoes, cayenne pepper, one onion sliced/chopped, one red pepper, chopped, 2 stalks of celery chopped and a few other spices that hubby added. Will probably put this over my potatoes and it will more than likely (if weighed out) would be abut 1/2 cup and will be served with asparagus, green pepper, celery and an onion all stir fried together.
Also my drink of choice is water and will be getting in 90 - 120 oz to aid my kidney's
Needing to take a pain med in about an hour as another kidney stone is acting up so need to get the med in before the pain gets worse.

bisky - I love my vitamix. I have a different container for grinding things into flour, but the regular container might work also. I think walkability is important as you get older, I can't walk to any stores or anything from my current home. There are no sidewalks or shoulders in the road for about 1 mile or so and the drivers down here are awful. The photo of Japan is very pretty.
Mihani - I recently bought some matcha powder for a recipe, but didn't care for the taste. I'll have to figure out a way to use it up somehow.
I got my car back today, finally!!! We were rear-ended two months ago. It took the insurance company a whole month to settle with us and then the car was in the shop for another month waiting to get fixed. But now I'm free to roam about.

July challenge: Slashed $261 from monthly bills…saving $3,132 a year.
Zero QVC & Amazon* shopping!
* Amazon shopping I do buy my vegan PUREOLOGY shampoo and conditioner from Amazon and that is nonnegotiable and it’s not a want it’s a need!
AUGUST CHALLENGE
Continue with my two goals of no QVC and Amazon shopping also add to that three things
One, $100 budget for groceries
Two, sauna four times a week
Three, treadmill 20 minutes four times a week0 -
Thanks for getting things started, Nanc.
Great goals and plans for August all! Mine are simple... stay the course with treadmill, strength classes, and staying WFPB.
Spring, YAY for getting your car back!
I just got done with some work and need to get to bed. We're just crazy busy and actually going to hire another person at least part-time. Thank goodness because I'm losing it.

Morning all,
I just wanted to post this link because I know some of you use protein powders.
There has been a recall, here's the link:

Well gals, looks like my little vacation got canceled. Joe and I were planning to go to Vancouver Island to stay at my parent's summer place for 5 days, and were trying to line up our pet-sitter. We didn't hear back and kept waiting and then finally heard back last night that the sitter (a co-worker's son) 'declined' the job. While I'm disappointed about this, the REAL issue is that we are going to need to find someone else to take care of Ruby, Radar and Kittens in the winter when we go to Mexico. Maybe we weren't offering enough? The kid is 21 and lives at home, and we thought $300 for 6 days would give him extra cash and a place of his own for a bit. He works during the day.
I lost just shy of 6 pounds in July which keeps me on track for my Mexico goals. For August, I want to be more active. Food could use a little tightening up as well.
Oh, and I LOVE the banza pasta! Effortless upgrade.1 -
Thanks, Mihani...I love the title...It's All About August...time to make major moves to set ourselves up for success going into the holiday months...with a great foundation, fabulous things are bound to happen the last four months of the year...making 2023 SUPER!
TODAY'S plan
no special order
coffee
sweet potatoes
Russet potatoes TJs vegan sour cream scallions
Dinner out…Arizona Broadway Theater “GAME SHOW”
oatmeal, banana, almond milk
1 quart green juice
1 pint carrot/apple juice
nectarines
Sorry bout the puppy sitter, bailing, Carla. I used rover.com and interviewed them when Lulu was a pup. I did not have anyone staying overnight. Also, on THUMBTACK you might find some good peeps...lots of reviews and you can interview them as well. Good luck.
Picking up my new glasses today...finally..so cute.
Election day here.
Posting this about Ann Esselstyn...she is so my role model...she is 87...I am 73 ... I aspire to be as fabulous as she is at her age.0 -

Carla - If I can fly to Italy to take care of dogs I would fly to Bellingham in a heart beat to take care of your dogs. When are you going to Mexico? I am not kidding. You know how I love to travel plus get out of the heat. I think $50 a day was fair but I also don't trust kids to take care of my dogs.
One of my best friends, Karla and I trade dog sitting. Our dogs get along. This weekend I am going to Dallas for an Aquarium show and she is taking my dogs. Then later she has a business mtg in Orlando with her husband and I will have her dogs. She recently went to Bothell, Wa as her daughter who is a physics major has a summer internship. Now we are all trying to figure out how to get out of this heat and move to the pacific NW. Problem, we bought nice houses in San Antonio prior to the market increase. To find as nice of a house that we bought for $350,000 would easily cost $1,000,000 in Washington area. Maybe we aren't looking at the right places. Anyways, glad you liked the Banza pasta.
Spark - Thank you for the protein info. I looked and the two powders I am using are not listed BUT I have used premier protein in the past. Good to know!
Magic - Thank you for the information about Ann Esselstyn. I am going to buy her book. They live in Austin TX! This is what I read briefly, could not get the link. I don't have instagram. "Ann is the author of the recipe section of Dr. Esselstyn's bestselling book, Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease, and co-author of The Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease Cookbook with her daughter, Jane Esselstyn. She is a graduate of Smith College and holds a Masters in Education from Wheelock College./I]
Mihani - great that they are going to hire someone to help the work load.
Early morning walk down at the Riverwalk in San Antonio before the heat set in. Making a Mexican salad tonight with beans, salsa, corn and avocado. UGHHHHH.....my mah Jong friend who is hosting the game Thursday night informed me she is making me special gluten free meat balls......I feel like I am a pain because I don't want the meat, now need to be gluten free and avoiding alcohol and sweets like the plague for my gut to be happy. She is 80 y/o and so sweet. She gets the gluten free but not the meat free. Sigh.0 -
Well done on losing over five pounds, Marilyn. Woohoo! Hope you are feeling better.
Spring, this was my first try of matcha. It's mixed with other things and there is stevia in there as well, so it wasn't bad. I am not sure I felt much of an energy/focus boost, but I had a sinus headache this morning so it wasn't a good test.
Thanks for the info on the recall. I've never bought any of those brands but yikes. You just never know anymore. I'm still afraid of romaine after all those incidents, but I have started eating it again finally.
Nanc, killin' the goals! Sounds like you are enjoying your juicing. Have fun tonight! Thanks for sharing that Ann Esselstyn link. She's so fun.
Carla, OH NO... I'm so sorry. If you wanted to ship all the pets here I'd take care of them for you. Better to know he's not entirely dependable than after you go to Mexico though. But hey, maybe Bisky has the solution!
Bisky, you are too funny, and you are definitely someone I would trust with my pets. I decided to quit drinking for 90 days while I committed to the fitness program and oddly haven't missed it at all after maybe the first Friday night. Even went out to a bar with friends and had club soda a couple times so far.
Strength class tonight and it was tough! I did it though.
Menu as planned for the week with the addition of ezekiel toast with dinner. Workout made me hungry!

Up, did the dishes...and tidied up the kitchen.
Had a nice time last night...dinner came with the show...they were very accommodating ... they made my salad vegan...of course that just meant lettuce and tomatoes...oh and some crunchy chick peas...entrée was vegetables on skewers with rice...perfect.
today, much of the same
coffee
quart carrot/apple
potatoes with vegan sour cream and green onions
mashed potatoes with 6 oz of fresh spinach wilted in, almond milk and a bit of vegan sour cream salt and pepper
oatmeal with banana and almond milkFat free refried bean tostadas!
vegetable soup with rice noodles
nectarines
hope y'all have one very delicious day!

Donna --- Yes! I know no one would take better care of our doggos and our place. If the timing works out and you are up for it, I would be thrilled. We're going shortly after Thanksgiving and staying through to December 26th or 27th. (btw yes, housing went bananas here and it was already an expensive area).
@SparkSpringtime69 thanks for the recall list for the protein powders. I love my vitamix, too. I use it to mow through pretty much anything. Just this last week I was out of garbanzo bean 'flour' so I tossed dry beans into the VM and 30 seconds later, bean flour. Agree on walkability being key when considering where to live.
Glad you enjoyed your dinner and show, Nanc. It sounds like a fun time. Is this the place you've gone before with a co-worker?
Yesterday was an emotional day. I don't know what all was going on but the cancelation of our plans didn't help. When I called my mom to let her know we wouldn't be coming up island this week, she let me know that she and my dad probably aren't coming to Mexico with us. (not because we were canceling!) Ugh. There's so much background on this but they are cancelling now after we had to uninvite Joe's dad and dad's wife from that same trip. So much stress and back and forth. I just wanted to spend time with my parents away from responsibilities. Everyone free to be. but my Mom is a worrier and neither of them are travelers. I just need to accept that it isn't their kind of thing. She left just a tiny opening to change her mind. Honestly, I wish she would just say either way because Joe's family may still be able to adjust their plans and come along.
Over the years I've gained and lost, and repeating the same territory can be frustrating. Today I am celebrating that I am once again in 'one-derland', weighing under 200#. I don't ever want to go above that line again.
We've got some wonderful 75 degree weather out there today with a breeze. I'm going to take the doggos for a loop around the property and then see what I can do to make this day great!
hugs to all, so nice to have all of the participation in the forum right now

Carla - Sorry to hear you had to cancel your vacation. I think $50 a day is plenty to pay someone to feed your pets and walk them. I hope you can line someone up in time for your Mexico trip.
Congrats on the 6 pound July loss!
Magic - You've reminded me that I need to find a new eye doctor (and every other kind of doctor) now that we're settled in down here. Glad to you had a good dinner and show. What kind of show was it?
Bisky - We visited San Antonio a few years ago, it's a really nice city and we loved the Riverwalk. Stayed there for a few days then drove to Arlington for a few days and saw a Cowboys game (my DH is a huge Cowboys fan and the trip was my birthday present to him that year). I hope you have luck finding a new home in Washington. Maybe prices will come down some by the time you're ready, although that would probably mean that you'd get less for your current home.
Mihani - I hope your headache didn't last too long yesterday. I think you have the right idea about quitting drinking-I'm sure it's hindering my weight loss progress. Sound like you're really killing it in your classes!
I'm going to start with 30 days with no alcohol and see how it helps, I'm sure it can't hurt.
Today:
I broke down and had a Dunkin Donuts everything bagel this morning, and now I feel stuffed. Won't do that again.
Lunch will be kale and tofu (the recipe called for cabbage, but I had some kale to use up and I'm not a huge fan of cabbage) and glazed pearl onions
Here are links to the recipes if anyone is interested, they can probably both be made oil-free:
https://www.food.com/recipe/finnish-cabbage-and-tofu-over-rice-176423 the tofu marinade was just ok, but the sauce for the kale was really good
https://www.food.com/recipe/glazed-onions-134764 these were really good, I used pearl onions
Dinner Tofu Tuno Salad on whole wheat tortilla.

I am so disoriented.. Todays is Wednesday and I keep thinking it is Friday.
Got up early with Brooks and swam for 20 min. Hiatal hernia slid into my chest and I couldn't take deep breaths....kinda scary but it resolved with sitting up right for an hour. Haircut day...I haven't had a haircut since November. I cut my own bangs and with everything going on with the move, Brooks' health issues and mine...hair was up in either a pony tail or a messy bun. No one but Brooks new how long my hair was and not a great look for 64 y/o woman. hahaha. I arrived with my hat on after swimming and pulled up. He did a great job!
Carla - are your dates rock solid? My friend, Karla is going somewhere for xmas week and I have agreed to take care of her pets....I am fine for Nov. - Dec. Karla can take my dogs while I am gone. Brooks could ask for a week or two of leave and then go back home. It would be fun.
Lets keep talking about dates. I am sorry about your parents not joining you. What part of Mexico?
Marilynn - did the stone pass? Worse than having a baby. Congratulations on 5 lbs gone. Good job.
Magic - I ordered the book. I feel I need to find a DR. for Brooks' to consult with about an anti inflammatory diet for cancer. The military is not helping at all other than to cut or medicate.
Mihani - I take pure green matcha tea dissolved with 1/2 hot water, then froth 1/2 cup of 30 -40 cal no sugar almond milk for green tea latte. You might want to add stevia or a little honey. I recently bought some chai tea that has mushrooms that I am going to try to mix with green tea. It is called Chaga Chai by Harney & Sons. It has Chaga mushroom, wakaya ginger, cinnamon, coconut pieces, cardamom, nutmeg. No sugar. Oh just realized, no actual green or black tea. Might have it for a little pickup this afternoon.
Sparky - I agree with you about alcohol and losing weight. Not only is it empty calories but also once you have a couple of drinks it numbs me to what I am eating or over eating.

Glad you had fun, Nanc. I really liked Dr. Essy's Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease and have read it a couple times.
Carla, I'm so happy this might work out for you with Donna. Maybe the guy bailing was fortunate. Sorry for the ups and downs with the trip. Not what you need when you've been so excited about this vacation. WOOHOO on seeing onederland!!! So happy for you.
Spring, there are times when I want to have a drink for sure, but I mostly only had alcohol on Friday evenings, and I make sure I am signed up for strength class at 9 am Saturday every week to remove any temptation. There is no way I'd make it through that class if I indulged Friday night!
Glad you are feeling better, Bisky. I bought some mushroom powder a while back thinking I'd add it to my coffee but I wasn't crazy about it. I should find other ways to use it. I'm sure if I threw it in a stir-fry or something it wouldn't taste so overpowering. Pooches are so cute!
Hope you are feeling better, Marilyn.
Things are really crazy at the office. This is supposed to be my catch-up week with the boss on vacation but it has been one thing after another. I'm going to spend a fair amount of time in the office this weekend for sure.
Stuck to plan again today. I have been drinking a lot more water and managed to drop another pound so I will keep that up.

Just had to pop on before I head off to work. Lost another whole pound this week! I've been stuck since the second week of July bouncing up and down a couple pounds, so two pounds down in a week is a welcome development. I was getting a little discouraged to be honest, even though I always try to remember Dr. F's saying: Focus on your efforts, the results will follow.
I got asparagus and broccoli at the grocery last night which I will cook up tonight and will last several days. My salad prepper friend said she got extra bok choy when she got some for herself so I grabbed shiitake mushrooms and green onions and already have carrot and peppers. Tomorrow I'll make a pot of brown rice and a big stir-fry with edamame.
Cleaned out my freezer last night since today is garbage collection. I was pleasantly surprised to find there wasn't much to toss. It just needed to be organized a bit better and now I know exactly what I have in there. Will stick to the plan of not buying more groceries until I actually need them.

Pint carrot apple
Quart mean green
oatmeal, almond milk, banana
Fat free refried bean tostadas
Sheet pan tofu scramble
Nectarines

Find sheet pan tofu scramble under Well Your World YouTubes

Nanc, that is the best one-way ticket ever!! thanks! Are the tostadas a recipe you make or a premade meal?
Mihani, I aspire to eat as healthfully as you. And now you go and rock it at the gym, too! Badass. Hope you get a good new hire soon.
I get my labs done tomorrow. The last time was 6 months ago and my cholesterol was high. My doctor wanted to put me on statins but I told her I was losing weight and exercising more. Since then I've lost around 35 pounds so I am hopeful that the results will be good.
We're still eating our way through leftover pasta. The Banza pasta is awesome and no 'repercussions' (or percussions LOL).0 -
Good luck with labs, Carla. I just had my visit...should get results by Monday. wow, 35 pounds, that IS outstanding!
Tostada, my "recipe".
Trader Joe's corn tortillas, air fried. Trader Joe's fat free refried beans heated with a bit of Trader Joe's shredded plant based parm. ... shredded crunchy ice berg, chopped tomatoes, onions, corn chile salsa...big squirts of lime.
YUM.
Thinking I will bring for work tomorrow...just layer it and use as dip with my broken corn tortillas.
Have a great day everyone.0 -
Carla, huge congrats on getting to Onderland, sorry I missed that in your earlier post.
Bisky, thanks for sharing the pics of your dogs, they look like real sweeties.
Mihani, I've found myself drinking more since I got laid off so decided it was time to put a stop to that. Way too unhealthy and getting in the way of my weight loss and fitness goals. Great job sticking to your plan and dropping the two pounds. I've been having such a hard time getting my rice to cook right lately. It seems no matter what I do, it comes out a little mushy instead of fluffy like it used to. Not sure if it's a new brand or I'm just somehow doing something different
0 -
Magic, I just checked out the sheet pan tofu scramble, looks awesome. Thanks for the recipes.
Carla, good luck with your labs tomorrow.0 -
Nanc, hope your doc visit goes well. The sheet pan tofu scramble sounds interesting. I found a recipe for tofu scramble that I love years ago and haven't tried any new ones since then.
Carla, hope you get good news from your doc. I'm glad you like the banza pasta. I found two boxes of it when I cleared out the pantry last weekend so I'll be having some soon. As you well know, I don't always eat the best, but I'm on a roll now. It's mostly because I don't want to waste this time at the gym. It's expensive because it's all small group or individual coaching. I don't know that I'll be able to afford it indefinitely so I want to learn and make a lot of progress while I can.
That's funny you said I'm badass. I actually got this cheap little bracelet on the inside it says "I'm a badass warrior" and I've been wearing it to remind me to stick to my goals.
Spring, has your rice just changed since you moved? Sometimes it's just a change in stove or cookware that will do odd things to foods I've cooked hundreds of times. I have a rice cooker but rarely use it just easier to use a pot.
Work is absolutely nuts. I was actually considering cancelling my classes on Saturday but I don't really want to start down that road where I'm not making it a priority. I'll just get to work after and spend all day Sunday in the office. I will work from home Saturday so I can get cooking and laundry done.
Menu today same ol' same ol'. It's easiest for me to stick to things that are simple and I enjoy eating day after day and mix it up some week to week and on the weekends.
Speaking of work, I should get busy have one thing that must get done tonight.
0 -
Oh, one more thing. Someone (maybe Spring?) had mentioned having a water bottle with times on it to remind you to drink more which I thought sounded kind of cool so I ordered one and it arrived today. It's an aquafit half gallon bottle. Luckily I ordered it before August 1st when I resolved no amazon for August. LOL0

Make your day delicious.0 -
Mihani, regarding the rice: we started to have the same problem back in Jersey. I'm thinking we may have bought a different brand, maybe it was on sale (we usually use Carolina brown rice). I tried rinsing it before cooking and that didn't work. I think next batch I'll try using less water and then just adding some more towards the end if the rice is still a little hard.
Timed water bottle wasn't me, but sounds like it might be helpful. It would probably only help me if it actually had an alarm on it that I could set to go off at regular intervals LOL
Magic, I make my almond milk with the same ratio, but I don't usually soak them. I wonder if soaking would leave less almond meal behind in the bag. I used to soak my nuts all the time before use (to get rid of the phytic acid, toxins, etc.), but have gotten a little lazy about that over the last few months.
For your yogurt, do you use store-bought soy milk or do you make your own? Also, store-bought yogurt or yogurt starter? Thanks for all the info.0 -
