T2D, Chronic Pancreatitis

Hello everyone, new to MFP and the group here. I joined after my doctor suggested tracking my meals and exercise more closely for reason's I'll hopefully explain below.

I guess I'm looking for some insight, advice, or even just some common ground...

I was diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes six years ago, along with a series of other unfortunate diagnoses. I've had ups and downs like I'm sure almost all of us have, but...

More recently I've been diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis.

I also have alpha-gal syndrome or red meat allergy, and am allergic to eggs but not chicken, so normally I mostly eat like a pescatarian...

I think my biggest problem is I can't get in to see a gastroenterologist for like another month, but every time I try to eat anything solid or drink too much at a time, I get instant unbearable sharp pain in the upper left quadrant of my stomach.

Right now I'm pretty much able to keep down sips of vegan meal replacement shakes, protein shakes, etc.

They've got me on medications like sucralfate, dicyclomine, pantoprazole, odansetron, etc.

Mostly concerned with the amount of weight I'm losing and not getting enough protein, I'm afraid that when I can get in to see the specialist they're going to want to put a feeding tube in, which I know logically I shouldn't be scared of, but even given my limited diet I'm kind of a foodie...

Well thanks for listening, and thanks in advance for any replies.

This is a tough place to be. It will be good when you can get in to the gastroenterologist. Hugs...

I feel your pain. In years past, I had a simple ERCP that went wrong. It infected my pancreas and I lost half of it due to necrotizing pancreatitis.
Because of this, I have chronic pancreatitis as well as type 2 diabetes. I joke that I take so many pills, I rattle now. Oh, and I am down to 10% of a working pancreas.
I tried the whole 6 small meals a day route. And, like you, I lose a ton of weight, then gain it back.
If you like fish and chicken (that's mainly what I eat). You could ask your doctor to prescribe Creon(a digestive enzyme) that will help your body to absorb more nutrients. With a damaged pancreas, it doesn't produce enough of these enzymes. I take them and my weight has kind of steady out. I don't lose as much now, even though I'd like to.
I have taken to added a piece of cheese with any meal that is mainly protein free, just to increase my protein intake.
    I hope this helps.

Hmm, just noticed the grammatical errors. But, I hope you understand what I was trying to say. I see a pancreas specialist rather than a gastroenterologist.
  • Sorry for the delayed response, was in the hospital. I am unable to take creon/pancrelipase due to risk of red meat allergies unfortunately. Thanks for sharing a bit of your story though.

Hope you are feeling better. I am guessing the hospital visit got you a chance to be seen by a gastroenterologist.

Sorry to hear about your hospitalization. Was it due to pancreatitis? I too hope you got to see a gastroenterologist.
I had to read up on alpha-gal syndrome. I don't eat much beef or pork. My main diet consists of chicken and fish, and occasionally a burger(but not often).
I hope you get some help with your pancreatitis soon.
