Beware the Ides of March! Honestly, this has been a tough week for me. I have had less energy than normal and have struggled to get myself on the treadmill. I've also wanted to snack more the past couple of days, and although I have mostly snacked on nuts and dried fruit, which is better than cookies and chips, they’re high in calories and fat. So the 130.0 that I saw last Friday did not stick around for long.
I've just been off in several ways. You ladies know how I hate change, and I'm getting lots of opportunities to deal with it. Fitbit was sold to Google and they've decided to get rid of the app that allows you to sync to a laptop. I had just congratulated myself for postponing upgrading to Windows 11, because it seemed that the fact that I still have Windows 10 was allowing me to continuing syncing and viewing data. There has been a lot of chatter from other users who also like to use a laptop and view on a big screen and are now unable to do so. There are also complaints from some people who are now having issues getting the app to work even on their cell phones. But just as I told hubby about my good fortune this morning, I realized that although I was able to bring up the app on my laptop, my fitbit wasn't syncing today. So I got my cell and finally synced. I can view the dashboard on my laptop—at least for now--but I cannot even open the app on the laptop. I could open it and sync at around 5 p.m. yesterday, so there must have been a March 15 deadline or something.
And then just as I started logging in here, I got a phone call cancelling my haircut appointment for tomorrow. This is the 4th appointment that has been cancelled since January. I last saw my regular hairdresser on December 30, and finally got one of his staff to cut my hair 4 weeks ago, but I was not entirely pleased with the results. But I think I may have to either suck it up and give the other person a second chance, knowing that she was not familiar with my hair and all its quirks, or I have to look elsewhere. After 27 years with Dominic, it's hard to let go, but his health issues appear to be serious, and he's almost 70, so I could hardly blame him if he just retires and enjoys all the other things he does so well. He’s a musician and an artist and he loves to cook and spoil his grandkids. So change is gonna come--yes, it is.
Katie, I was so happy to see your post. We missed you. I am so sorry that the reason is that you've had so much on your plate. I so hope that the antibiotic is finally working on your daughter's strep throat. Having a sick child is scary and must just drain your energy in more ways than one. And I hope that the carpal tunnel surgery goes well and you heal quickly. I've been lucky to avoid that, given that I was on a keyboard more than 8 hours a day for many years. But some of my coworkers had the surgery and it went very well.
Hope everyone else is doing well. Going to have to run now. Hubby is beginning to pace because I've been at my desk longer than he thought I would be, and we need to run a few errands before we go over to see our friends’ new kitchen. It's so windy and cold here today, he is not able to get out back to finish the work on the patio border. There is a story attached to that task that I'll share when I get some time. But before I go, here are my not-so-hot 7-day averages for last week:
Steps = 10,744
Stairs = 12 floors
Kcals burned = 1,699

I'm not surprised by this because I've wobbled above and below 134 for a week. It's obvious I'll have to change something if I want more reduction . . I dread what that might be because I know I'll reduce more if I give up more carbs, but I REALLY hate that, however, I know it works. I don't eat sweets, but I'm talking about starches . . pasta, bread, rice, potatoes, etc. Ugh. I'm not going to do that this week with our visit to kids in Oregon coming up, so as Scarlet O'Hara said, "I'll think about that tomorrow".
Sorry to post a day late, but yesterday was so busy.
We had family zoom last night, and we're doing a March madness family bracket competition, with the adults who want to bet also putting their bracket in an online pool of $25 per entrant. The pool is made up mostly of hubby's former coworkers, but we participate every year. Our family loves March madness, even our girls. The grandkids have jumped onboard and filled out their own (no betting) brackets for family fun. The women's basketball team at the University of Utah are competing in the women's NCAA tournament, so we got tickets to the game tomorrow night and are going with daughter, SIL, and their girls.
Also, our 10 year old granddaughter in Cali had a scary story to tell about how a Redwood tree fell onto her school and a second grade girl was hurt, taken to the hospital for stitches. Grand's classroom wasn't affected and she was unaware of anything until the fire alarm went off and they had to evacuate their classroom. It was raining (which is what caused the soaking of the roots of the tree and combined with the high winds it toppled) so they were evacuated the large multi-purpose room, and after a few minutes the power went out! The room is in the center of the school with no windows, so it was pitch dark, and one of her classmates fainted! Poor kids. . they're all so on edge these days! But, I was glad to hear about how brave our granddaughter was, and how much of a leader. Luckily, the power was restored quickly, and although some schools were closed the next day, hers was open and she went to school like always. Cali is really getting dumped on.
Katie, I was so happy to see your post, but sad to read about your daughter's strep throat. I hope that the antibiotics get that finally under control, and she can get feeling better. Does she still have her tonsils? I know sometimes kids have to get them removed to not keep getting infections. And, I'm so sorry about your ex. I don't know how he can keep holding it up. But, I hope you can get it pushed through soon. That's very frustrating.
Sarah, sorry about all the FitBit issues. Maybe someday you will join Kelly and me with Apple Watch
And, losing your stylist is hard. I dread that for myself. The search for a new one can take a while and a lot of not so great haircuts. I remember I tried quite a few before I found the stylist I've had for 30+ years. But, maybe you'll find an even better one.
Kelly! Wow!!! I'm sooooo proud of you! Great job. Tell us more about your diet!
Lois, grandkids are a workout just being themselves, lol. It sounds like you're improving every day!
I've gotta run, hubby is calling me.

Sorry I'm late. Work has been insane, add in PT, dr appts and life in general. When I log off work, I'm wiped out. eat dinner, take my meds and head to rest on the recliner for a bit. Do my therapy band work and then try to go to sleep at 9ish. Today I had PT and then sleep doc for my CPAP machine. Doing well. BP was 170/20!! That's never happened since it went up! She made some adjustments to my settings so hopefully it will work a bit better for me. Therapy is super exhausting. Rewarding, but exhausting. I swear I want a nap when I'm done. My weight is up, but that is fully dressed and after lunch, so I need to get upstairs before I eat and get dressed. Fridays and Saturdays I do attempt to sleep upstairs in our bed. So far not sleeping well and achy when I get up, so I head back to the recliner on Sunday nights. I've had an issue with an ingrown toenail. I had my pedi a few weeks ago, she trimmed it straight, and then when my guard was down, she was cleaning it up on the 2nd pass and then side clipped it again! So it grew in really really bad this time. I have been soaking it in epsom salts 2/day and it's relieved a lot of the pressure. I was ready to call the podiatrist. Anyhow, it's been hurting to walk and wear my compression socks = even tho I leave it loose at the toe, so my leg continues to swell. I ordered the open toe sleeves and I dunno. Glad I only ordered one pair. Hoping this nail grows out quickly. My daughter will be here in a couple of weeks and she can help me. in the meantime, I keep soaking it, and filing to keep it short.
Kelly - what is your meal plan to have those results?!?!? Keep doing whatever it is that you're doing.
Sheesh - I'm with you. I need to cut the carbs way back, but I like sweets AND pasta and some breads (mainly tortillas). So I do need to alter our snacks that we have on hand.
Sarah - hoping you're giving that teaching thing some thoughts. Have you called your doc's office back about your shoulder?
Will check back soon.0 -
Sorry I wasn't able to make it back yesterday to write more. Work was a bit nuts.
Yes, I'm quite happy with my results. And honestly, all I'm doing is eating healthy, watching my portions and working out everyday. I don't really cut out anything from my diet, I just have stuff in moderation. Not having pizza, spaghetti, ice cream, etc everyday for every meal, definitely helps.. who knew lol
For the first 4 weeks, I was doing a gut health type of eating style, just to see what my body would react to if anything. In that time, I cut out dairy and gluten, plus I limited my alcohol intake to only twice during those 4 weeks and I also made sure I didn't have any more than 10 grams of added sugar a day.
I didn't find any major intolerances. Alcohol affects me, which I already knew but just deal with it and sometimes dairy can be harsh on my tummy, but if I limit it then I'm okay. Also, too much carbs and gluten can make me have inflammation too.
During those 4 weeks, I did a small workout program and managed to finish it. That was the first program I ever finished and was so proud. I'm now on week 2 of a program that's mostly weight lifting, functional weight training, mobility & stability. I'm definitely getting stronger. It's workouts that are 6 days a week, some way easier than others, but I also make sure I close my apple watch rings everyday too.
Sheesh - Wow.. that's a crazy story about your granddaughter and her school! Hopefully everyone is okay now. How much damage was there to the school?
Sarah - Sorry to hear about your troubles with FitBit and your hairdresser. I know you hate change. I know you'll eventually embrace it with these couple of things and move on in your own time.
Lois - It sounds like you're super busy as well. Good job with still getting your PT and doctors appointments in.
Katie - So sorry to hear about the hard times you're going through. Hopefully the meds are helping her. Poor girl. It must be so difficult to handle and deal with everyday life while you're still dealing with your ex. Sorry for my ignorance about divorce as I don't know much about it, but do you live somewhere that both of you have to agree in order to get a divorce? Or is it just that it's too expensive if one person doesn't agree? Either way, hopefully you are able to find some peace with it.

Hey all. It's the start of a new week, and I hope you're all well. I'm committed to doing my best this week on health and fitness. I know if I commit here to you ladies, I'm more likely to do it

We're flying to Portland Friday, returning the following Tuesday. While there, I plan to get as much activity as I can, and be reasonable with calorie intake. I have my trainer today and Thursday for strength, and will do cardio and some stretching in addition this week.
I hope you have a great week.

Greetings, all. Sheesh, I'm the same way. If I tell someone else I'll do something, I'm far more likely to follow through. I realized this morning that my activity for next week will be lower than usual because I have a minor medical procedure Thursday afternoon that will take me off my feet for a couple of days. Nothing serious. Just getting hopefully getting a vein on the side of my left calf that makes me look chronically bruised taken care of. I had this done before and nothing changed, so here's hoping that it works this time. Another "gift" of having thin, fair skin!
I'm still struggling with lack of energy. I think it may be partially caused by interrupted sleep. I am just not sleeping as well as I think I should. Hubby's neck and back are bothering him again and so he's tossing and turning, and I'm a super light sleeper. I also struggled with my appetite yesterday. Makes me wonder if the two go hand in hand. I ended the day with a small deficit, but my weight still bounced up a pound over night. I think that's because too many of those calories were from sugar. I made oatmeal raisin cookies for one of our volunteer groups and there were some leftovers that called my name.
But today, the sun is shining and it's fairly warm, so I hope to get an outside, hilly walk in before Bella the kitty's vet appointment this afternoon. Made it to class, which was very small, because an accident closed the road going by the clubhouse. Fortunately, I was able to use my sense of direction and wind my way through a housing development that spilled out on that road a bit above the closure.
Sheesh, I hope you have good flights to and from Portland and lots of fun with your family out there. Lois, Kelly, and Katie, thinking of you every day and hoping that your week is going well.0
