Today's Topic: Delayed Gratification

Losing weight is largely an exercise in delayed gratification - give up a slice of pizza today so you weigh less tomorrow. So setting aside weight loss, are you generally good at delayed gratification? What’s an example of delayed gratification from the non-weight loss portion of your life?

I’m not always good at delayed gratification - I tend to want what I want when I want it. However, I was good at it in terms of managing my finances. We maxed out our ability to contribute to tax-deferred accounts throughout our life in order to have a more comfortable retirement, and I’m glad we did.

Delayed gratification can be hit-or-miss for me. In some areas I'm really good at it. For example, I often prefer planning over spontaneity. I'd rather plan for a day to clothes shop rather than decide on a whim to go shopping. I am usually willing to accept a delayed arrival for an item if it will be cheaper (though to be fair, I do buy a lot of things via Amazon prime with built-in 2 day shipping).

In other areas, I'm not so good. When I want a new book, I want it NOW. When I want to work on something (like a home repair), I want to do it immediately and get it out of the way.

Reading what @steve0mania wrote is very, very familiar to me. I am incredibly similar. I will say that I am very good at evaluating really important things prior to committing to them.

I can wait but I remain impatient while doing it.

I would point out, also, that many often are frustrated with the speed of microwave cooking.

When I'm in the Zone delayed gratification works pretty well for me. That being said I must really delay longer than usual because I still have trigger issues believe it or not. I typically need to delay foods on my do not eat list till I've mad some substantial progress in the downward direction. Then work them back into my diet slowly with small portions. These are typically heavy carb and sweet items.
