Today's Topic: Artificial Intelligence
The London Daily Mail asked an Artificial Intelligence device for its five top tips to lose weight. It came back with:
1. HIIT
2. Meal prep
3. Intermittent fasting
4. Reduce sugar and carbs
5. Track your progress
Buying any of this? How many are you doing?

OK, refresh my mind. What is HIIT? 2,4&5 sound like WW.0

And, why not? (100+ pounds off, and holding)

Bursts of high intensity, Lowe intensity, high intensity - all within one workout.
And you probably know AI (capital A, capital I) is artificial intelligence - although it looks like your name (which is why I typed it out in the question)0 -
I think it makes sense - and any Artificial Intelligence bot is gonna scan the literature, and these are what ruse to the top.
I do 2, 4 and 5. I’ve only done intermittent fasting by accident. My stock answer on that is I fast from 10 PM to 7 AM or so. In terms of high intensity interval training, I don’t deliberately do it - although my preferred outside walk is all hills and valleys, and my heart rate report does mimic that.0 -
1. No
2. Around 5 minutes prior
3. By accident or default.
4. Yes
5. Yes
Advice from AI not really.0 -
I had a coworker who went whole hog into intermittent fasting, and, for that matter, most (or all?) of that A.I. top five list. He was working with a personal trainer on both nutrition and fitness, and had tremendous success. He tried to convince me of the merits of intermittent fasting, but I was never going to bite. Even if the science makes sense, it's not for me.0

There’s a court case in NY where the lawyer filed a brief prepared by AI. Unfortunately, he didn’t check the work before he filed it with the court. It’s an impressive document. Reasonably well written. A sound legal argument supported by legal citations in prefect form. Problem is the citations are fake. Made up. Lies. It took the court a bit of effort to figure it out but the judges clerk tried to find the appellate opinions referenced in the brief. The case didn’t exist. Completely made up. It’s not unusual for lawyers to try to stretch the application of a case to help support their argument. Sometimes lawyers will go so far as to misrepresent what a case says. But making them up? No this is new.
What I take away from this is that AI looked at humans at work and concluded: when put on the spot the smart thing to do is lie and cheat.0 -
As with any approach to health, always validate and verify prior to buying into it.0

I think we've heard about AI hallucinations already, right? I think most of us would buy into the idea that "you can't outrun your mouth." In other words, it doesn't matter how much exercise you do (HIIT, included), you can always ruin that hard work by eating too much. As such, I'm not putting too much stock into an AI generated list.
There are places where AI is likely to be very helpful. Reasoned opinion is not one of those (at least at the moment).
What it really gets down to is that AI is really good at taking large datasets with known outcomes, and extrapolating those results (e.g., figuring out who has breast cancer via mammogram analysis by first reviewing thousands of prior mammograms and correlating those data with who does, and who doesn't, have cancer, and then extrapolating those data to "unknowns.") AI does not seem to be so great at "thought."0 -

Great assessment, Steve.0
