Today's Topic: Are you NEAT?

Ran across an interesting topic on NPR. https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2023/07/22/1189303227/neat-fitness-non-exercise-activity-thermogenesis

It’s a concept called NEAT - short for non-exercise activity thermogenesis. It’s the calories you burn above your basal metabolic rate in activity other than intentional exercise. Give it a read, and then let us know how “neat” you are.

I'm a MESS (Mindless Eating Sitting Sleeping).
TOL and I walk a fair amount, but I, especially, tend to sit, way too much. I probably get some NEAT when I make, and cleanup dinner.
I, for one, will attempt more NEAT, and less MESS, going forward.

I’m actually less “neat” than I used to be.

When I was working, I left for the train shortly before 5 AM, and got home after 6 PM. There wasn’t a lot of time for a formal program. However, I took the stairs at work, and over time progressed to doing nine floors at a time three times a day. I got off the train one stop early in Boston and walked the last 1.5 miles. Essentially, I looked for ways to be active where I didn’t necessarily need to be active.

Now that I'm retired, I’ve got more time for activity. I get in a stretching program every day, and either a good walk or some Nordic Track time. Essentially, I’ve shifted from NEAT to “EAT” while still losing (and now maintaining) my weight.

When we lived in Key West our condo was on the fourth floor west end of the hall. The elevator was in the middle of the building. Unless we were carrying groceries it was less complicated to take the strairs. After a while it wasn’t so difficult. I think I gained about 3 lbs from that little change.

One of the main things I try to do is standing at my desk rather than sitting. I am lucky enough to have a sit-stand desk, and I take advantage of it regularly.

I don't do drive-thrus except in rare circumstances - for many reasons - getting in steps being one of those reasons. So, if I go to Starbucks, for example, I get out and walk into the store. I also select parking spots away from the door of work and shopping. I have never understood circling and circling to find a spot right next to the door. Unless you have a true health issue, it doesn't make sense to me. I don't generally take the stairs; I have a physical problem that makes that difficult. But, I hope to include that.

My weakest time, actually, is when I am at home. I become a hermit and couch potato very easily when I am at home. I think that is one of the reasons I prefer to work in my office...where I'll walk to someone's office/desk rather than to text them on TEAMS.
