I walk several miles per day. There’s a meditative aspect that can’t be beat. I don’t track exercise, it’s not about that.
A thing I miss about Key West is the yoga. I got in with a bunch of people who were very low key. Truth is I’m kinda intimidated by a lot of yoga stuff. I’ve been in some yoga classes with prickly instructors. I’ve also been in some that seemed to practicing competitive yoga. I’ve looked at yoga here in Fort Myers but the instructors all seem to slim and trim 38 yo women. Guess I’m going to have to stick my neck out and give someone a try.1 -
Big fan of yoga. But, you do have to find the right instructor. There is nothing wrong with going to a beginner's class.
I walk a lot. I am trying to walk more. I like walking.
I'd love to get back to swimming.0 -
TOL and I both do Fitbit's 250 steps/hour challenge for the full 12 hours, 9AM to 9PM daily. Often miss an hour, but it does get us moving. I used to get 9-11K, but those days are gone now.
Really missed it during my problems, early this year. Didn't so much gain weight, as girth, due to lack of toning. It is starting to tighten up, now I'm walking regularly.0 -
The reality is that my exercise since college has been “activity” rather than a formal exercise program - mow 2 acres of lawn, clear snow from the driveway and from the roof of a colonial, etc. I was reasonably capable at The Olympics of Life, but no competitive sports, etc. (I used to do the full ten floors of stairs three times a day when I worked in a ten story building, but that ended when i moved to a 23 story building.)
Now? My formal exercise is Tai Chi twice a week. I do a series of stretching and strengthening exercises every day focused on lower extremities, and it basically continuing a set of PT exercises I was given to deal with some issues. I’ve recently added some light hand weight work while I do the lower extremities. I also either walk 3+ hilly miles a day or do 25 minutes on the Nordic Trac ski machine in the basement.
So I guess I do “old man” exercises focused on conditioning and toning rather than strength and stamina. My orthodedist says no running, impact or rotational activities for these knees any more.
George @88olds - you may want to see what your local senior center has to offer. My Tai Chi class is through them. Yoga, Tai Chi - it’s all balance and range of motion, unless you want to get into the “spiritual” side of yoga.0
