Hungry

Okay, seems like I must be doing something wrong because I feel like I am never full. I started Paleo about 4 weeks ago, I usually have great success eating this way 4-5 days a week, weekends come up and I go haywire. So once again I'm starting on Monday (yesterday) with the intention of doing this completely for thirty days. But I'm hungry. Is it just from changing up my lifestyle or am I not eating enough of something?

Since your diary is private I cannot tell ya if you're not eating enough. With that being said, what has helped me was to increase my fat % to 65%.
What are your macros set to?0 -
I agree--if you open your diary we could give more informed help0

Fat,Fat and more FAT!
If you are going crazy on the weekends,it's because you are having cravings and that usually comes from too high carbs(over 100,for me over 50)as well as eating too low fat and potentially, too low calories.
Lots of people suggest eating when you are hungry and stopping when you are full.
It takes a long time to get yourself into a groove with paleo that works for you.
Always recommend a whole 30 when starting on this journey. It allows you to get in touch with yourself and food.0 -
I'm guessing you're not eating enough protein and/or fat, or you're just plain not eating enough. I never felt hungry in the early stages of paleo, and I was eating at a pretty large caloric deficit.
To answer the other part of your question, you're probably loading up on sugar/carbs over the weekends which isn't helping matters at all.0 -
How much fat do you guys eat each day?
I just changed my diary setting, so you should be able to take a peak.0 -
1. As mentioned, eat FAT, lots and lots of healthy fat. From animals, coconut, avocadoes, and maybe a little from raw nuts (some people over-eat nuts but usually it's if they are roasted and salted).
2. Eat as much as you need to, of fat and protein (NOT fruit) and green leafy salad vegetables (no HUGE portions of carb-heavy veggies) to be full and satisfied. I add fat to veggies always. Avoiding fat is something to get out of one's head.
When I first switched to a Primal way of eating, I allow myself at least one week of eating however much I need to get through the carb cravings, without giving into the sugar.
Seriously, stop allowing yourself to go crazy on weekends or you will always be struggling and will never achieve the full health benefits of this lifestyle, one of which includes no longer struggling with excessive hunger.0 -

Edit: change your macro settings. You are getting far, far, far too many carbs (just for yesterday, 43 grams from a "salad" plus a processed ice cream treat, plus half of a banana, and a potato?!) for someone who is struggling with hunger and cravings. Ummmm, you are still eating wheat bread??? Skip the sweet treats, potatoes, grain, and then when the cravings are under control, "sweet" should be fruit only in limited amounts. Also, don't enter net carb database items. Right now you need to focus on the total. Track fiber too, if you want to "subtract" it. But most important, track SUGAR; it's going to blow your mind. 25 grams is about right for most people who need to lose weight; even lower for someone fighting cravings.0 -

1306 cal
16 carbs

I eat 2200 cals/day and my macros are set to 15 c / 65 f / 20 p (or in grams 83 c / 159 f / 110 protein0 -
Yeah, honestly, for the first week or so, just eat paleo - don't worry about your macros or your calories. Make sure you get veggies and fat at every meal and it should even out. I don't limit carbs because I feel really horrible when I do, and I don't ever really feel hungry.0

The advice to limit carbs comes from the OP's admitted struggles with craving and hunger. It does not apply to everyone that is Paleo. Special advice for special circumstances.0 -
I don't agree that you need to track sugar and avoid fruit. However, you do need to select fruits wisely if you're watching carbs and trying to avoid having those cravings.
I ate berries each morning with a splash of coconut milk in my early paleo days. I had no issues with sugar/carb cravings or hunger pangs at that point. I never tracked sugar, still don't.
I eat a bit more fruit now, and I have sweet potatoes a few times each week, but I still don't go hog wild with the sweet/starchy carbs. I keep carbs around 100-150g/day. I typically eat 120-150g protein and around 98g fat.
One thing that I found helpful in controlling hunger is to eat a very large portion of leafy green veggies at each meal. This doesn't have to be a salad, though that certainly works. Saute a bunch of spinach, kale, etc. and have it with eggs and some sorta meat in the morning, along with a handful of blueberries (or strawberries, blackberries) with a splash of coconut milk (or full fat cream, if you do dairy) super filling and tasty breakfast.0 -

lol! yes yes I know I'll come over to the "dark" (paleo) side when I'm ready0 -
I'm more primal than paleo as I love cheese and butter and cream. I tried giving it up, but my family didn't like me very much during that time frame!!!!!! But I'm still a work in progress, so one day I might do the Whole 30. We'll see :ohwell:
My macros are set to: 2000 calories 10% carbs/ 25% protein/ 65% fat.0 -

What do you mean change my macro settings? I'm sorry if this is stupid, but I'm not sure if you are referring to a setting in MFP or what.0 -

To adjust your calories/ fat %/ carb %/ protein % go to your home page and click on the tab that says "Goals" and then choose "Custom" and then you can change your macro settings there.0 -
I have the opposite problem (at least for now - only on day 4). I am not hungry at all and barely netting 1200 calories a day. I do feel my fat is too high, but I am trying to not stress over that.0

Out of the last 3 days, 2 of your days are extremely low in fat. You do know that Paleo does not limit macros and especially encourages healthy fat consumption... for health? I would be concerned about the sugar, not the fat.0 -
If you look at the percentage of my diet though, it's high. Like 50%. This is new to me, but it is a little stressful. I am worried I will gain, but I realize 4 days is not enough to go by. I agree I can get the sugar down.0

Okay, I changed my settings, I have decided I will add in some dairy, I feel much better today. Not completely satisfied, but I feel much more in control. I just made "fat bombs" after reading the forum. I hope I have my numbers set correctly, because I am not really sure how to do those.0

Click on 'My Home,' then on 'Goals.' There's a button marked 'Change Goals.' On the next page, choose 'Custom' and then click 'Continue.' This should take you to the page where you can fine-tune your ratios.0
