Hi everyone. I’m a vegan and my husband recently found out he needs to cut down on animal products and sugar. It seems like a keto vegan diet are in store…but how would one do that? I know all plants have protein, but is it enough to go into ketosis? Tyia

Ketosis comes from limiting carbs, and guess what, all plants have carbs. Most plants have lots of carbs which is why the keto diet limits plants eaten to those that are low carbs which would basically be most greens, broccoli, cauliflower, and a few others. Even those are limited in quantity as eating only them would still provide too many carbs to get into and say in ketosis. I assume your doctor said your husband needs to cut down on animal products. That will make keto very difficult as to maintain ketosis one needs to provide plenty of fat and a good amount of protein. Doing that with only plants, or even mainly plants, will be extremely difficult. My personal opinion is that vegan or even a diet primarily made up of plants is not compatible with keto. For myself, to deal with my blood sugar I went keto. It not only got me from prediabetic to normal A1C numbers, it also has improved my insulin sensativity on the days I choose to eat sweets for a special occasion (maybe 5-8 meals a years). My triglycerides plumeted. My HDL went up. Joint pain went away. Brain fog gone. Tooth sensativity is gone. Mentally, I am much more even keeled than I was before. I have good energy overall. Blood pressure dropped in a matter of weeks so i went from 3 medications for it to one that I can likely stop in the near future. The only negative, in my doctors opinion, is my LDL cholesterol is up. I, however, am less and less convinced that particularly for a person whose body is functioning in nutritional ketosis that high LDL is a marker of anything bad. I have actually moved to an even more meat based diet over time and don't plan on stopping keto, or more precisely ketovore eating ever.0

I attempted this last year. I found it very difficult and limiting to do a vegan keto. It isn't impossible but it is very challenging. I like a variety of foods and it was to hard to be that limited. What I do now is not vegan but vegetarian/ low carb. I have moved away from Keto and eat more plant based but not completely. I eat eggs a lot. I raise my own chickens so I know what I am feeding them. I keep my carbs around 100. I also will add in fish into the diet as well.0
