This is a thread for everyone. If you're new to GoaD, or to weight loss, your questions and comments are always welcome. If you're maintaining, or a long-term loser, your thoughts on the topic may be just what someone else needs to hear. If you're reading this, join in the discussion!

Each weekday, a new topic is offered up for discussion.

Today's Topic: Metrics

No, not wrenches or sockets.

If you didn’t have a scale to weigh in, what would you use as metrics to gauge your weight and your health? How confident would you be in your conclusions?

    Clothing sizing, particularly waist size.

What Greg said. Also - the mirror.

How my clothes fit is a big indicator. I used to use how my wedding ring fit, but now I'm finding that the arthritis in my fingers has a greater effect on whether I can get my ring off than my weight!

Yes, except that my fingers swell during the day, so getting it off at night can be difficult. As far as the rest, yes to the mirror, how my clothes fit, and my belt.

I'm a poor judge of weight within 5 lbs without a scale. Health is a different animal. I can judge nuances of health pretty well and can usually pinpoint a cause among the usual suspects: sleep, diet, stress, exercise.

I’m with Tim; I tend to be oblivious to the smaller (<5#) changes. That may be because my history is that my weight fluctuates between three and seven pounds over the course of any given day. Also, I’ve got clothes in the same size, style and manufacturer that fit differently, and the only change I see is that they’re different colors. So for me, the scale is pretty 8mportant to help judge the consequences of my more recent decisions.

One odd thing? I note that if I’m lying in bed on my back, my belly drops off sharply from my sternum. The degree of that drop tells me something about whether I'm in my Green Zone or not.

Clothes. But I’d soon find the brands with the biggest mediums.
