2024 Summer 5% Challenge Theme: Continents of Summer Olympics
🏆Congratulations Challengers! This Summer marks our 60th season of the 5% Challenges! We started in Spring 2010 on SparkPeople, and successfully transitioned to My Fitness Pal in 2020!
📅This season, we will transition back to an 8-week Challenge. Many Challengers enjoyed the longer, 10-week format that we enjoyed, however, the time involved recruiting for the Challenges, writing the Challenge, set-up and execution of the Challenges/Challengers has made it clear that the leaders of the individual teams **NEED** a chance to ‘regroup and rejuvenate’ and 8-week Challenges seem to allow a little ‘extra time for your leaders to ‘rest’ before starting their new Seasonal Teams. We always begin planning/collaboration as soon as the current Challenge winds down. Even though our Challengers get a bit of a break, your leaders work tirelessly to plan what we will do for the ‘next season’. When we have a longer Challenge - there is a shorter time to put the next Challenge together and many leaders felt rushed as a result. Therefore, we are back to an 8-week format, for now. This does not mean that we will never again consider a 10 week format, but for this Challenge ~ the 2024 Summer 5% Challenge, we are reverting back to our 8-week format. The modern Olympics began in 1896. In researching information for the 2024 Summer 5% Challenge, it is written that the Summer Olympics have been hosted in 23 different cities and have been hosted in 19 countries. Did you know that SIX countries have posted the Summer Olympics multiple times? Those 7 countries are: United States (5), United Kingdom (3) France (3), Greece (3), Australia (2), Japan (2), Germany (2). Lets visit these 3 countries during our Summer 5% Challenge, shall we? We’ll likely begin and end with France since they are hosting the Olympics this year.******************** ******************** ******************** ********************

For the 2024 Summer 5% Challenge, we will repeat our Summer Theme of Habits vs. Motivation. Summer officially runs from Thursday - June 20, 2024 through Sunday - September 22, 2024. Our 2024 Summer 5% Challenge fits nicely between these dates.
We will focus on building sustainable habits and take the focus off of motivation. As Jim Ryun says, “Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going.” Given that Jim is a former three-time Olympian, he is likely less vulnerable than us to starting a resolution with intention and motivation…and losing steam and focus. For the Summer 5% Challenge, we will strive to do things differently and succeed in our endeavors! A new season is the perfect time to do things differently and to set yourself up to succeed!!
43% of your daily behaviors are involuntary, performed out of habit. A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and will occur automatically. We will focus on habit formation to make permanent healthier habits which result in better outcomes.
Your leaders will help/guide you in how we do the challenges. Please friend them so you can communicate with them through MFP email if you have a question or to let them know if you will be away. This season will surely provide many lovely summer days where we are physically fit and have ease of motion.
The basic 5% Challenge requirements are to post - daily, if at all possible. First, you will need to exercise and then you are encouraged to practice your weekly ‘Living The Good Life (LTGL)’. We ask that you record all of your activity - daily, and at the same time also report your LTGL points. You are also required to weigh-in weekly. If you are restarting your exercise and diet program, proceed at a pace you are comfortable with.
Some of the Challenges may be things you are already doing, and for that, you are to be commended. As a result, It will be easy for you to contribute points to your team. For some of us, these Challenges will will require planning and practice so that we can begin to develop those healthy habits. Although the LTGL portion of the Challenge changes weekly, team members are encouraged to do their best to continue each newly acquired skill throughout the entire 8 weeks ~ you will be well on your way to acquiring new habits.
Make a promise to yourself to commit to "a healthier lifestyle and wellness each day. Focus on your exercise, food choices, relaxation, sleep, mental health, staying connected, and feeling positive about life."
