================================================================================✈️ DESTINATION: Japan - 6,000 Miles ~ Get Outside & Read Labels ✈️
As we near the end of the 2024 Summer 5% Challenge, we are now entering Week #7!!
Welcome to Week #7 of the 2024 Summer 5% Challenge. We hope that you are enjoying the Challenge and that you took the time to get to know some of your fellow teammates and have begun to form some meaningful friendships. Getting/giving support to your fellow team members is one of the things that make the 5% Community so very special. Thus far, we have practiced our daily habits (or as we like to call them: Living The Good Life) of getting our BMC (Basic Metabolic Calculator); Meet Your Cheerleaders; Water; Nutrition Tracking; Freggies; and 9” Plate and Read Labels. This week we add ‘Getting Outside’ to our list of things to practice.
Some basic rules that you should note for the duration of the Challenge:
**Exercise / LTGL points must be reported for the week that we are currently working on and final numbers coincide with our Weekly Weigh-Ins (no later than SATURDAY at 1159pm ~ your local time)**
**Weigh-Ins … We encourage you to weigh-in on time (if not, early). Weighing-in early is always acceptable. If you will be away for a weigh-in, consider posting your weight any time before you leave; if that is not possible, please reach out to your Baggage Handler/Leader to report that you will be away. Together you will come up with a plan to weigh-in early or to have your absence excused. Exercise / LTGL Weigh-Ins are DUE WEEKLY (no later than SATURDAY at 1159pm ~ your local time)**
. Since we allow team members to join at any time, if you are late in joining the Challenge, you will still be required to record your weight and are encouraged to immediately jump in with both feet!! Reach out to your leadership team for instructions if you are not sure where to record your weigh-in(s) and/or your weekly exercise/LTGL. THANKS!!
This posting is for information only. PLEASE POST YOUR RESULTS ON YOUR CHALLENGE TEAM PAGE. Each team has a similar ‘set-up’, yet each team also has their own ‘look & feel’. Any and all questions will be answered by your team’s leaders. Another good source of information will be from your fellow team mates on your team’s discussion board.

✈️ DESTINATION: Japan - 6,000 Miles ~ Get Outside & Read Labels ✈️
We began our journey by visiting France and will likely end our Summer 5% Challenge with France again (since they are this year’s Summer Olympics host). For our second week we visited the USA and discussed its multiple Olympic cities. We visited Greece in Week #3, United Kingdom in Week #4. Last week (Week #5) we were fortunate to tour Australia. Week #6 brought us to visit Germany and this week our individual team planes will fly us to Japan
Japan hosted its first Summer Olympics in 1964, Tokyo was the host city. This is also the first time that the Games were held in Asia. The second Summer Olympics held in Japan was the 2020 Summer Olympics. Of note, this Olympics was held one year late (in 2021 instead of 2020 following the worldwide COVID-19 pandemic). Once again, Tokyo was the host city. The motto of this games was ‘United by Emotion.’ The motto tells us that “Sports enable us to overcome different environments and become one world through emotions such as joy and excitement that the athletes’ competitive performances bring together in our hearts.’

The emblem of the 1964 Tokyo Olympics
The emblem of this Olympics shows the Olympic rings superimposed on the emblem of the Japanese flag. The Japanese national flag represents the rising sun.
The carrier of the Olympic flame, Yoshinori Sakai was chosen because of his famous birthdate: August 6, 1945. Not only was that his birthday but the day the atomic bomb exploded in Hiroshima. They chose him because he was born on that important day and they meant to pay homage to the victims as a call for world peace.
Some memorable champions of the 1964 Tokyo Games were the first athlete to win the marathon two times, Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia; the career medal count of 18 was realized by Soviet gymnast Larysa Latynina and a gold medal was finally earned by wrestler Imre Polyak, a Greco-Roman, who had previously finished 2nd in the same division at the three previous Olympic Games.

An unprecedented demonstration of unity and solidarity found the Tokyo 2020 Games hosting the first Olympic Games following the COVID-19 pandemic. This Olympics focused on the celebration of athletes and sport. The Games were originally scheduled to take place from July 24-August 9, 2020; they were postponed on March 24, 2020. The games took place July 23 - August 8, 2021 and became the first Olympics ever held after the proposed start date. The Tokyo 2020 Playbooks were established as guidelines for safe and secure participation and operations. They set a new standard for large-scale sporting events and ensured that everyone would be able to take part in the games safely.
The Tokyo 2020 Games hosted 339 events in 33 sports, the most in Olympic history and included the debut of skateboarding, sport climbing, surfing, karate, BMX freestyle and 3X3 basketball.

📝 Living the Good Life - Get Outside & Read Labels 📝
**LTGL ~ ‘Get Outside’ was previously written by Overall Leader - Lynn ( kaliswalker )**This week get outside for a bit of fresh air and activity, whether it’s on your balcony, backyard or even your local park, it all contributes to your overall health, in both body, mind and soul.
What are the benefits of being outside? It can:
• improve your mood.
• reduce feelings of stress or anger.
• help you take time out and feel more relaxed.
• aid emotional wellness.
• improve your physical health.
• improve your confidence and self-esteem.
• help you be more active.
• help you meet and get to know new people.
• connect you to your local community.
1. Boosted moods – considered by some to be a “natural antidepressant”, getting active outdoors and in the sun provides added mental health perks (particularly for those who may experience seasonal affective disorder).
2. Decreased stress levels – can provide a distraction from the stress and anxieties that life can throw at us, calms the autonomic nervous system (think fight or flight).
3. Provides a daily dose of vitamin D – time outdoors lets us soak up some extra rays and naturally build our vitamin D stores.
4. Increases energy – fresh air is invigorating and refreshing while also helping ensure more restful sleep.
Being active outdoors (even a little bit each day) can go a long way to keeping you happy and healthy. Remember, the next time you are feeling down, anxious or even tired, the best thing for you might just be a little time reconnecting with the great outdoors. If you can, consider adding in outdoor activity - a yoga session, stretching, a bike ride or a stroll through your neighborhood.
A walk has been proven to boost problem-solving and creativity and improve your mood.
