Tom Landry remains an icon in Texas. Well loved and well respected.
A little story: I grew up in Amarillo, Texas. Our primary crosstown rivals was Amarillo High School. In 1959, both Tom Landry and Bum Phillips applied to be the head coach at AHS. They hired Bum Phillips.
Later that year, Landry applied for the Cowboys head coaching job. When the Cowboys started playing in 1960, Landry was their coach. Several years later, Bum Phillips took over the Houston Oilers, now the Tennessee Titans.
Just a little trivia.

I was stationed at Amarillo for a year, for school. Went downtown almost every weekend. Nice place.0
