Exceptions that you make

I'm curious what exceptions all of you allow in your paleo or primal diet and still have success and feel good.
I'm currently still adding organic sugar to my coffee every morning and I know that I'll have to cut this soon. My exception for years was sushi, but I've cut it out.

Cheese (Kerrygold usually or raw milk)...that's the big one, I think.0

I still talk to non-paleo people - albeit with that judgemental look on my face.
kidding of course.
I eat cafo in public.
occasional peanuts
really good cheese at a party
couple drinks a week
a corn tortilla or chip when I'm feeling really wild.
and sugar desserts about once a month0 -
I was actually thinking about it today on my weekly hike. If you look at WHAT I eat exclusively, I'm pretty strict Primal and only because I'll eat a bit of cheese in an omelet or something. Save the cheese, I'm very paleo all the time. Now, if you look at the QUANTITY of the things I eat sometimes... that is definitely not paleo. Grok was not housing a 16oz jar of almond butter and/or a bag of pork rinds in a sitting like I'm capable of.
Of course, like everyone else, I do have the occasional cheat. But these are just the one-off deals, not a regular "exception" to the rule.0 -
hmmm....I guess right now is my salad dressings....should make my own, however I did make my own ketchup today, so really just condiments , occasional peanut butter, very rare though0

1. As a regular exception for me is dairy and mayonnaise. I stopped drinking milk and yogurt, but i regularly consume butter, cream , full fat sour cream, full fat cheese and dry cottage cheese, and any smoked cheese I can get my hands on. That is why I call myself primal and not paleo.
2. I love mayo, and I just not ready to make my own. I buy Hellmanolive oil mayo, which at least doesn't have soy in it, only olive oil and canola oil. Cold pressed canola is not good, but at least very little PUFAs as it is mainly monosaturated.
3. Other regular exception I make is snap peas. It is mainly pod , so I consider it equivalent to green beans.
4. My worst exception is whey protein power. I buy the kind that has no soy, no aspartame and other nasties, but it is a major nonpaleo. I have to cut it some point, but not now.
I occasionally eat homemade almond flour muffins, which I make with honey. Also occasionally I eat white potato and rice, but these are small quantities, like half cup of rice twice a month.0 -
I bought some grass fed cheese and keep it on hand for guests, boyfriend, etc. I recently made a really spicy chicken dish (chicken tinga) and added some cheese and sour cream since I didn't know how else to tone it down. then after I had a bad reaction to the dairy, it came to me. avocado would have done the trick! DERP I wish I had thought of it earlier.
I also made an exception for whey protein powder for many years, but I cut that out too, mostly because of the expense.
anyone else ever try to make a protein shake with coconut milk? LOL it doesn't work so well. turns out really thick like ice cream, I had to grab a spoon.0 -

I used coconut before with no issues, but I prefer almond milk now, soo yummy!!
I also use egg protein powder, I guess that's another one of my exceptions lol0 -

I make my protein shakes with coconut milk all the time, but there's a trick to it so it's still drinkable! I usually start with 150ml of coconut milk, add 50ml of water to dilute slightly, add my other ingredients, and just before blending everything up, a little crushed ice. If while I'm blending it all together it still looks very thick, I'll add another 50ml or so of water until it gets to where I like it
And my exceptions are things like hard grating parmesan cheese, an occasional glass of milk, and my biggest weakness is ice cream. As much as possible I try to stay away from these things. I've had success with keeping my distance from the cheese and milk, but not so much the ice cream as of late. I do also throw in some dark chocolate but only 2 squares at a time.0 -

I had that, though not quite spoon-thick. I think it has to do with how it reacts to the thickening agent in the mix (there's usually xanthan gum or some other thickening agent to give it a creamy texture), I could be wrong though. Perhaps it'll work with a homemade protein mix?0 -
I'm Primal, so dairy in general isn't really an "exception" for me.
That said, my main exceptions are peanut butter, ice cream, and protein powder. I go for the best quality and fewest ingredients I can find, though, when I do get it. So, my ice creams tend to have an ingredient list of "cream, sugar, milk, eggs, cocoa" since I'm a chocolate fanatic (unless it's Jeni's, then it's "Snowville creamery cream and milk, sugar, [cheese, cayenne pepper, dark chocolate pieces, strawberries, insert other non-typical ingredient here, depending on flavor]").
My peanut butter is either just peanuts (and optionally salt), or Jif Natural Peanut Butter, which does have a little palm oil and molasses, I think, but it blends into drinks (such as protein shakes or liquid fat bombs) the best I've tried so far.0
