What brand of coconut milk/cream do you use?
So far all the canned ones have preservatives & the carton ones...don't even taste like coconut milk not to mention have crap in it too.
I usually buy the canned kind.

I usually buy canned. I often will get Thai Kitchen even though it has Guar Gum
I haven't found one that doesn't have something wrong with it. When I have the time I make my own, super easy and I know what's in it then.

The only kind of canned that is offered by the company that ships here the cheapest is Thai Kitchen. But since they are part of McCormick who is one of many companies that oppose GMO labelling and market many garbage foods, I boycott them. The kind I used to buy when I lived closer to civilization was Native Forest. The BEST. Apparently the Aroy D is ok, but only the one in a carton. I don't know first hand though.
Currently I have some powdered coconut milk by Wilderness Naturals, but the ingredients are also not perfect. But I do avoid the BPA in the cans I guess, and I waste much less cuz I can just mix up exactly how much I want. I don't use a lot of coconut milk so maybe it's no biggie. I mostly just like the oil.0 -
This is Wellness Mama's recipe for homemade coconut milk. I buy Bob's Red Mill Flaked Unsweetened Coconut. It's in many stores and available on Amazon
Ingredients
4 cups of water
1.5-2 cups of unsweetened shredded coconut
Instructions
Heat water, but don’t boil. It should be hot, but not scalding.
Put coconut in blender or Vitamix and add water. (If all water won’t fit, you can add the water in two batches.)
Blend on high for several minutes until thick and creamy.
Pour through a mesh colander first to get most of the coconut out, and then squeeze through a towel or several thicknesses of cheesecloth to get remaining pieces of coconut out.
If you have to split the water, put all the coconut that you strained out back in the blender, add the remaining water, and repeat.
Flavor options- add in after all coconut has been strained out: ½ tsp vanilla extract, ½ cup fresh or frozen strawberries, 2 tsp cocoa powder + ½ tsp vanilla.
Drink immediately or store in the fridge. Should be used in 3-4 days after making for best flavor and texture. Since there are no preservatives or fillers, the “cream” of the coconut milk may separate on the top if stored in the fridge. Just shake or stir before using.0 -

The recipe a friend gave me was even easier, if you have a Blend-Tec. Just 3-4 c water to 1 c medium shred coconut (no need to heat the water), blend on "juice" setting, strain thru nut milk bag and refrigerate.0 -

LOL, I actually don't heat the water either but this is the recipe I started with until I realized I didn't have to heat it. However, I came to this conclusion only after making almond and hemp milk. i was all like, why do I heat the coconut water when I don't heat the almond or hemp water? Thanks for pointing this out, i should have re-read the recipe or written what I do before posting!0 -
I've been buying Trader Joe's unsweetened coconut milk in a carton for my coffee, but I use the canned coconut milk for cooking usually.
thanks for posting the recipe to make it yourself! I'm going to have to try it asap0 -
aroy-d from the asian market in the green tetra pack has no additives and is bpa free, plus a pretty good price- if you have a 99 ranch neaby they almost always have it in stock.0
