How important is food enjoyment to your health?

It’s an interesting article. Hedonism is an important part of my food choices - as in “how much food pleasure can I get for my available food budget/points?”

But more important, the article prompted me to think about food pleasure and health.

In the end, I think most food choices are a “guns and butter” curve (in economist terms). That is a curve that says as an example, if a society focuses solely on getting guns, they will conquer more lands - but starve because they don’t have enough invested in food. On the flip side, a society that invests its resources solely in food won’t be able to defend themselves from a society that has guns. Every society makes a decision about where along the curve they wish to balance their spending.

Class dismissed . . . .

The point being that healthy eating and food pleasure may well be guns and butter in this analogy. Rice cakes and tofu may help you live forever - or maybe it will just feel like forever because you won’t enjoy it. Conversely, if it wasn’t for managing my health and weight, I’d be living on pizza, burgers, chocolate, fries - and perhaps live another five years from today. So, my food satisfaction in terms of pleasure isn’t high because it’s biased towards healthy, but it’s as high as I can get it within the confines of health.

And blame Greg for that long-winded post. It he hadn’t made me think, I wouldn’t have felt the need to lay out my thoughts. 😉
