Hi all,
I was diagnosed early Jan 2025 with Type 2 diabetes and the doctor was also concerned about my high blood pressure. I'm 57 and there is no history of diabetes in the family. He didn't give me any guidance on what to do after I left his office other than change my diet and exercise regularly and recheck my blood in 3 months and if needed I can go on medication.
I initially struggled with diet choices because I have to watch sugar/carbs and sodium levels, now that I'm 2 weeks in and finally meeting with a dietitian next week, I feel I'm on the right track. I've lost 5 pds and my blood pressure is slowly coming down.
Is there anyone else who is dealing with these 2 health issues?
What is priority to eliminate? carbs or sodium levels? What diet plan do you follow on MFP?
I live in western Canada so other Canadians advice would be helpful in regards to resources available here beside Diabetes Canada site.

I am in the eastern US so I am not a Canadian resource.
Do you know your A1C? I am curious that you were not prescribed metformin, but maybe it was more borderline.
I am on meds for blood pressure. I was on metformin for the diabetes too but found I could manage the glucose readings by following a very low carb diet, and came off the metformin in 2018.0 -
Learning to eat in portions will be a great help. You can google high glycemic foods and eliminate/restrict them from your diet. Make most of your calorie intake from protein and work in as much fiber as you can.
I don't count carbs. While i don't buy bread or potatoes I will still eat them I go out. the time before this when i restricted my diet I took out rice and corn. But I eat them now and have found that my blood sugar is still in the normal range. I do take medication but even under the medication it wasn't controlled well. Now it is.
learn to eat healthy and stick with it. Hopefully you will be able to reverse the effects.0
