Ketostix for urine measure density of ketones in your urine. Higher density of ketones (dark reading) can occur from more ketones, OR less urine (less hydration). You really should only use them to tell you if you are or are not in ketosis, not how deep ketosis is. Usually a dark reading just means that you need to drink more water.

If you want something more exact that tells you how "deep" you are in ketosis, you need to do blood testing. Test strips for blood testing are pricey, so most don't bother.

So blood test is the only way to tell how many carbs you can have & still be in ketosis ? Bummer !

No. The goal is to know if you are or are not in ketosis. That's what ketostix do. If you are in ketosis, you will show a minimum of "trace". You can adjust carbs up and monitor with Ketostix just fine.
