Pre-workout nutrition does the night before matter?

I recently lost about 20 pounds. I’ve been lifting for over 10 years but took a break five years ago. I’ve now been lifting for approximately two .a I noticed that when I had a lower calorie day/ meal the night before work out it was much harder - even when I ate a good pre-workout meal. the other day I ate a substantial dinner and my workouts were a breeze the next morning? Has anyone else seen this

For me, the food intake the day before has a bigger impact than the day of. I recall hitting PRs at the gym the day after Christmas dinner. so it is something.
