hernias and squats

Hi! I am new to an exercise program, trying to build some muscle to help with weight loss, as well as tone up. I am a 76 year old woman, need to lose 70 pounds. When I was getting PT for hip flexor issues I was doing squats with a 25 pound weight. The kind where I sat back until my butt touched the bench. My concern going forward is this: I have two hernias. Trying to avoid surgery, or at least to lose weight before having surgery. I also do pull ups and squats with the TRX straps. Please help me understand what my limitations should be with the hernias. I do have a hernia belt and feel more confident when I wear it. Thanks for any information!
