(I cannot believe I just did this. I typed out a long post, then pulled up a new tab to check on a book title that I had blanked out, and I lost the whole darned thing! So here I go again!)
Regarding the weight, I had said "Ouch," because although I knew I'd probably gain some as I recovered from the colon surgery, I had hoped it would not be so much. I think it's a combination of watching how digestible food is and not watching kcals so much and not getting anywhere close to my usual activity. But the doc said last week that I can begin adding back foods I had to watch before and a few weeks after the surgery and that I can begin to move more as long as it doesn't cause me pain. Some friends had us over for dinner the other night and served a large salad with fruits, veggies, and cheeses, along with chicken kabobs. And since salad was a main component of the meal, I ate more than I normally would these days, and my tummy did okay. So I think that's a good sign. And during my recovery I've allowed myself more sweets than usual, so I'm going to try to moderate that, too. You gals know how much I love ice cream, and our friend continues to bring us homemade cookies and cupcakes every week. But prior to surgery, I started only eating sweets every third day, which helped because I wasn't totally denying myself. So I plan to get back to that, too.
Kelly, I was so happy to see your post when I logged on, and more than happy to hear that you're enjoying the new house. And I had to laugh at the pajamas comment. If I'm the first to get up, I go out in my pj's to get the morning paper, and although I look before I go, I still get caught sometimes by a dog walker coming around the corner or someone I didn't see getting in or out of a car. Because we live in a townhouse, our driveway is not very long, so most of the time, I make it before I'm seen, but if not—I just wave! LOL
Lois, I hope you had a wonderful birthday, and I agree with Sheesh—5 pounds is a good loss. And I also think it's interesting that they're having you focus on nutrients and not just kcals. I suspect that's a healthy way to lose weight. I also suspect that you'll see a difference rather quickly in your blood work. Let us know.
Sheesh, when I lost the post, I was checking that book title for you, which is "That Is Why We Lied" by Karin Slaughter. It really was not that great a book. I kind of slogged through the first half. But when I realized that the ending was not going to be what I had envisioned, I just had to get to the end.
Well, this has taken longer than I expected, so I guess I'd better get moving. I have a follow-up appointment today with my breast surgeon. I have not seen her since the surgery was done in October. This appointment is overdue because of that snafu with my mammogram appointment and all of the other things that have gone on in our life. Crossing my fingers and hoping for as good a report from her as I got from the colon surgeon. I will let you know.
Kelly, I am sorry your parents are having some health problems. I am sending good thoughts their way. Oh, and before I forget—I am changing my mind about Aiden, too. At the end of last week's episode, I was just, "Oh, ick!!!"

Ok…just had a Sarah experience. Wrote a long note and poof - gone.
Disneyland last weekend and recovered on my birthday. Triggered my back getting off the couch in our room - that wasn't fun - at all. Lots of phone calls, texts and FB messages. Certainly felt the love and blessed to be loved by so many. And you ladies…are awesome. Thank you. Oh and I'm sure I gained back 2-5 of those lbs this past week. Disneyland, chocolate covered strawberries and cookies from friends and colleagues for my bday. The cookies are in the freezer, but we had to eat the strawberries. They don't hold very long and everyone forgets that it's just me and hubby - especially on a Monday.
I did meet with my trainer last night. Due to my back issues, we modified and then I spent some time on her Neubie machine (a tens unit on steroids). Didn't help much, but I did what I could last night. I have my annual tomorrow evening with blood draw on Friday. So we'll see what happens after those two appointments.
The program's focus is 80g protein, 50g or less net carbs and a minimum of 800 calories. Yes, Sheesh - processed sugar is primarily off the table. Each meal should have protein with vegetables or fruit. So, the dietician for my breakfast has had me add in fresh berries with my eggs and bacon in the morning. And to fit in my net carbs the Sandwich thins to aid with fiber intake. Breakfast: 2 eggs, 2sl bacon, 1/2c blueberries/1/2c strawberries; lunch: 4oz sirloin or filet with 5 asparagus spears; dinner; 4oz sirloin or filet with 1c broccoli. I have a salad with romaine, sliced cucumbers, sliced celery and 2tbs dressing somewhere in the day. Whenever I have the need I will snack on mozzrella cheese (2oz max per day), sugar snap peas (about 1/2 c but it's a freebie, celery or cucumber slices and grape tomatoes. The veggie are unlimited so that's good when I need something to crunch.
Kelly - so happy you're getting settled into your new home. And I feel like this stage of parent child is the suckiest time…even worse than challenging teenage years. It's so hard to see our parents decline in their health and it's hard when there's nothing you can really do to make it any better. It just stinks!! My heart is with you. Hopefully Tyler enjoys his jeep and keeps thing going in the right direction. How's Ellie's recovery coming along? Is she going to play hockey again?
Sarah - prayers to keep your continued healing with no further interruptions!! You'll be moving before you know it!!! Hoping hubby is getting along well too!
Sheesh - you're such an inspiration… I really didn't want to go train last night, but I thought about you and pushed past my not wanting to go. I miss "loving my workouts". It's a struggle bus, that I'm sure I'll get it back soon. Just a couple more months for Maui - super exciting!!!!

I was actually surprised when I weighed this morning that I was down. Not surprising in that we've been so super busy and I have been trying to be more active and eat better, but surprising in that I've been struggling to lose anything, even when I try. I'm trying my best to focus on getting more protein, as I think that's my major problem. I'll try to increase that, as well as work on my portion sizes too, as I'm sure those could be smaller.
Lois - Glad to hear you enjoyed your birthday, minus the back issue! Hopefully that's resolving itself. Great job still meeting with your trainer and making it work. Your meals sound delish. Love that veggies are unlimited too. Ella's recovery is going well. They told us it would take a year for her to return to play but she has a "Return to Sport" appointment in August where we'll learn more. Her higher level hockey career is done, but as long as she can get back playing hockey, then we'll all be happy, including her. She wants to tryout for her high school team, but that'll depend on if the surgeon allows her to return to sport. And she might play regular AA league play as well. Time will tell.
Sheesh - I agree with Lois. You really are an inspiration! When I'm being lazy and using being tired as an excuse, I should just take a page out of your book and just get it done. lol When I get home from work today, my plan is to do my workout.
Sarah - My posts used to disappear on me so much and now I just make sure that before I click Post Reply, I highlight the whole post and copy it. That way, if the screen timed out or if it errors, then at least I can just paste what I had copied into a new post. Just a tip from it happening to me sooooo many times. I hope your appointment yesterday went well and you got a good report! Oh and I totally don't care of people see me in my pjs when I'm wearing pjs with pants and a normal shirt, it's when I'm wearing a barely there tank top and shorty shorts type pjs that I care if the neighbours see me lol 😆

Good morning, ladies. Just popping in to let you know that all went well at the surgeon's yesterday. Honestly, I have never had such a thorough breast exam. That woman spent a long time and just kept digging and rubbing, so when she said all is good and we'll see you in 6 months, I wanted to hug her. I did ask specifically about the cyst that showed up in the untreated breast in my last mammogram, and she assured me that she felt nothing. The radiologist said that these sometimes just disappear. I do have to have a follow-up mammogram on the left breast in 4 months with an ultra-sound on the right to make sure that cyst is gone. Will schedule those appointments today.
And wow, Kelly, that's a great loss. Isn't it funny how sometimes we lose when we aren't really trying and at other times, we do our best and stand still? I also find it hard to get enough protein. That has been really challenging while I've had to be in pre- and post belly surgery mode. And I'm glad to hear that Ella is doing so well. She has such a good attitude.
So it sounds like we're all ready to focus on some things that will help us be leaner and healthier. I think I might try going through my Bone Builders routine today and see how that goes. I had to wait 50 minutes past my appointment time yesterday and half of that time was in an exam room. So while I waited, I did some sit stands—without weights of course. Before I left, my surgeon asked how my range of motion is coming and whether I wanted a referral for PT. I told her that I think it's a little less now because I had to stop activity for the colon surgery, but I think it's going to be okay. She asked when I could get back to class, and I said I think soon because I did sit stands while I was waiting for you. And she laughed and said, "Of course, you did!" 😁
Have a great Thursday, ladies. It's a few degrees cooler here today, but heading back into the triple digits tomorrow, so still no outside walking. But I did get on the TM last night for 45 minutes at 2.8 mph. Not like it was, but heading in the right direction. (And Lois—just did a control C!)1 -
Yay for Kelly's reduction AND for Sarah's great news from her follow up.
And yes, Kelly, I've also been doing the copying thing when I post. It's just that i had to jump to a work screen, and could have sworn I saw my post but then I needed a CTL C for work and so it wasn't there when I went to close the tab. Ah well.
Sarah - enjoy getting back to your workouts.

LW: 132.2
TW: 131.6I'll accept that . . although I hoped for more.
Kelly, wow. . a 5 lb reduction since last time without hardly trying! Having a busy life will sometimes do that. Although, in my case I tend to stress eat. I'm so happy you're in your house, and settling into more routine life. Glad to read that Ella is doing well, and plans to get back into hockey. And, I hope your parents are doing better. Lois is right that it's hard to see this happening, but there is not much you can do.
Sarah, I'm relieved that the set backs are behind you with good follow-up news on everything! Now it's just a matter of full recovery, and then gradually getting back into your normal movement. The key word there being "gradually". I know how anxious you are, but take it slow. Glad you're already feeling good enough to do a bone builders routine, and sit stands. You're already walking about the speed I always go . . pretty slow . . only 3.0 on the treadmill. I get to higher heart rates with weights and dance cardio. How is your hubby feeling? I hope he hasn't had more issues with mini-strokes.
Lois, I know a Disney weekend was just how you wanted to spend your birthday :) Your diet program and foods sound delish, and enough food to eat. I think the hardest part of any diet is having the right foods in the house, especially fresh vegetables. I've thought about trying food delivery like you. I did that during Covid. But since then I've gone to the store, which is very close so I feel like it's already convenient, just an errand I don't really enjoy. Glad you're back to your trainer. I hope your back is better.
I appreciate the nice "inspiration" compliment, but I think it's only somewhat true, lol. If my trainer wasn't going to show up and make me, I don't think I'd lift, and for sure not as heavy! She keeps me going on that, and like I said, the treadmill is slow and steady while I watch the news or something on tv. I do like dance cardio on Apple, but I'll only do a HIIT workout when my trainer brings it up, hah! I got a new toy on her recommendation. . it's a vibration thing I stand on, sit on. She said it might be good for my bones, lymph drainage, and balance. So, now, when we finish weight training, I get on that thing. I'm up to 8 minutes on level 8. I'm not sure if it's doing anything though 😜
Our son texted me to ask if his daughter could come earlier than previously planned. She was to be brought to us on Tuesday by her other grandma who lives in St. George in Southern Utah. But, now she's coming on Saturday. Our son said she's really not liking things there, and wanted to go earlier to our house 😢 They have a lot of animals, their son has horses, and the AC isn't working great, and "there's a lot of dust in their house" and she's been sick with bad allergies. It's been really hot and dry, which she isn't acclimated to at all. Also, grandpa has cancer and is undergoing treatment. She's just generally homesick and she knows our family better. So, I'm going to put the humidifier in her room (like I always do for my Cali and Oregon kids), and take her shopping, nails, swimming, etc. Spoil her, LOL. It was lucky that our daughter and her littles here are going to be in town because they were supposed to be on a trip to San Diego with her hubby's family, but it got cancelled because his sister is really sick with her third pregnancy and can't travel. So, my daughter has taken some time off work and will bring her girls and step daughter (who is about the same age as Cali grand) to join in the fun. We'll have her for a week, so wish me luck with an almost 13 yo who is homesick! I'll post if I can find time.

Sarah - That's fantastic news from your surgeon! Things are looking up. :) And I second what Sheesh says about taking things gradually. I know how keen you are to get going, but keep taking it slow. I'm sure the last thing you need or want is another setback.
Sheesh - I've heard of those vibration things and I always wondered if they actually do something or if they're gimmicky. Kind of like those pads that you put on your abs that clench them. And oh boy, 13 yr old girls can be fun 😏 Hopefully she'll be happier once she gets to your place. How's hubby's eye rash doing?
This weekend we are headed to the cabin tomorrow morning for 1 night. Just me, Shawn, Ella and our pup as Tyler has to work. I have a bunch of gardens there with flowers, plants and veggies so I'm eager to check up on how things are doing as we haven't been there in a couple weeks. With all the forest fire activity in the area, there is a crazy amount of animals coming through our yard. We have a camera set up on our garage there, and we've seen lots of bears, racoons, deer and even a porcupine the other night. One of the bears even knocked over one of my barrel planters. He must have been itching or something lol That's the one my lettuce was planted in, so we won't have any of that this year, oh well. I also have a whole bunch of potatoes planted, tomatoes, beens, zucchini, cucumbers, some hot peppers and some dill & basil. My Mom is a huge gardener, so has been teaching me it all. I even don't mind weeding the flower beds. I guess I'm turning into my Mother a bit 😶🤣 We'll come back Sunday morning and then the hubby will likely want to get started on getting material for the deck, which the permit was just approved yesterday.
Temps are supposed to sore here this weekend too and it's so super humid out. Should make for some interesting storms (we had a tornado warning last week).
Have a great weekend everyone!

Sheesh - you're right. I guess when the trainer comes to you, it does make it easier. I could ask her to do that again (I have everything here…lol). but i do like her space and environment as well. If I had to choose one to go to…definitely my trainer. And our grocery store is about a mile away - so not like I have to travel much. I just hate going there. I dunno why. And oh boy - a 13 year old for a week. FUN!! I'm not sure I could handle Kelsie for a week, four days at Disneyland was my limit…lol but I'm sure she'll have a great time with her cousins joining the fun as well. And it's an awesome feeling when the grands choose to come to you!
Kelly - have fun with your garden. I used to grow summer veggies…I haven't done it for a couple of years, but I loved having the fresh veggies and basil right out back. Enjoy them…if the wildlife hasn't helped themselves in your absence. :) We're in the monsoon time…so muggy and hot and just yucky overall here. I dislike July-August in AZ. Congrats on the permit for the deck!
Had my annual last night. This doc isn't as touchy as my previous ones and I'm not sure how I feel about that…. not that I liked the other touchy's but I'm presuming they had a purpose for the tummy palpitations and glands etc. We chatted about the progress and direction…great conversation, but my "exam" consisted of him listening to my lungs and heart. Do your docs do tummy and gland palps? Just curious. End result was I'm headed int he right direction and all of my meds were refilled. I did my bloodwork this morning. and he did order the back xrays so I'm going to attempt to get that done this afternoon after groceries are delivered.
Hubby is still heading to downtown all weekend so I'm not sure what I'm going to do all on my own. Rhea and her parents will be home with her other grands, so I've asked them to come up next weekend to celebrate my birthday versus them coming up on Sunday when I know they have so much to do to get ready for the week. I know I SHOULD clean my desk off and file the extra papers I have and scan my paperwork, but we'll see. Nothing exciting on the books at the moment. Rest for sure.
Have a great weekend!
