It's been so hard to walk outside in this heat. So I usually get a workout video in from the app or YouTube.

@MizzMizzou71 - That sounds like a good plan. I'm still working out outside, but I don't live in the hottest part of the country. Don't get me wrong, it's hotter than I like lately, and humid - but this is mid-Michigan, not Arizona or something. It's been in the upper 80s and 90s F quite a lot here recently.

One of the things that helps me is that we start working out outside in the Spring (rowing club), then I keep a regular schedule as it warms up . . . gradually, one hopes. That helps me acclimatize to the heat.

Also, I always take water in the boat, and we always stop for water breaks. ("We" because I'm often in multi-rower boats. Obviously, if I row a single, I can stop anytime I wish and drink.) I have other cooling strategies, too: Obviously, what I wear. In major heat, I might pour water on my hat or shoulders for extra evaporative cooling. When we take a water break, I'll keep one hand on my oar handles (necessary for safety), then trail the other hand in the water above my wrists so the cooler water can reach those surface veins in the wrists. That's surprisingly helpful.

We avoid doing really intense work when it's especially hot, too. Many - not all - the people I row with are also 60+ (I'm 69). Speed-wise, we're not keeping up with the college rowers that share our river, but we do work hard at times . . . but we definitely do hold off on race-pace pieces or higher-intensity interval workouts for cooler days, sticking with moderate intensity steady state when it's hot/humid.

I have to say, this Over 50 group isn't very active. If you're over 60, or even getting close to it, there's an over 60 thread here that's a bit more active.

There's no one there checking IDs at the door, and I know some of the folks are in their 50s still and no one minds. One thing: Like any long-running thread here, the newest posts are at the end, on high-numbered pages. You can jump straight there with the number/arrow keys near the top and bottom of each page in the thread. The first time you go it, it may take you to page 1, where the posts look old. At the end, there are some posts from today, August 1 2025.

    Best wishes!
