Mud Fever

Hi all, Mateuss has mud fever. Has anyone ever had to treat this? Any suggestions on what to clean it with? How to keep it dry? Can I wrap it with a quilt and standing wrap so he can still go out?

It's only on one of his front legs for now.

I use good old betadine. You want to let it soak in for about 10 minutes, and when you rinse make sure to get all the scabs gone (or as much as he will let you). Lots of folks like to use all sorts of fancy dancy topicals of the month and swear by them. Vetericin is one of the latest ones I have heard of. I haven't used it, based on the ingredient list it is diluted bleach and costs a fortune.

The real point is getting it clean and dry and keeping it dry. Some folks wrap, but you have to change the wrap once it gets wet or it just holds in all the bad humors. You also want to make sure any grooming stuff you use on that area you don't use on the rest of the horse, clean well and bleach once you have things under control or you can reinfect him.

So sorry you are dealing with this, but it is the time of year for it.

    Good luck.
