Foam rolling problems

I recently began working with a personal trainer for general strength and conditioning after a layoff from my normal workout (rock climbing) due to injury. The trainer has told me to foam roll my lats because my injury was in a shoulder, and IT bands because I run on weekends.

I understand that it's supposed to be a deep tissue "massage", but after last night's rolls I have 6 inch long blood bruises on both sides from the lat rolls, bruises up and down my hips and outer thighs, and just sitting down is getting more painful by the second. I won't be able to sleep on my side for days. I don't mind soreness, but this is over the top. The trainer supervised me doing it, so I can only assume I was doing it right. I am on the slim side, which may contribute to the bruising.

The question: is foam rolling so important and beneficial that I should just suck it up, deal with the obvious subcutaneous bleeding and pain, and keep doing it? Are there other ways to stretch and release deeper muscle tissue? And I guess the biggest question, do I even *need* to do that? I'm asking out of complete ignorance and frank desperation. I want to do what my trainer has asked, but I can't see doing this to myself twice a week. I'll be a black and blue mess who can't sit or lay down in no time.

Thanks to all who read all the way to here!! All advice welcome!

Edited to correct spelling error. It's early
