Skin reactions to gold or other jewelry?

On and off I go through periods where my ring finger will turn black due to a reaction to my wedding rings. It is really annoying! I also get dry patches under my rings on occassion. I am assuming this is hormonal in nature because it doesn't happen all the time.
Does anyone else have this problem and what do you do about it?
My solution has been to stop wearing my rings for a few days until it settles down, and then go back to wearing them again like normal. It seems to happen once every couple of months or so. I put Neosporin or some kind of lotion on my finger until the dry patch clears up, but really hate it when my fingers turn colors!
