Weird Smelling Pee

So, I'm wondering if this is fat-adapted related? The past few months my urine has smelled weird. Like asparagus pee, but without eating asparagus. I mean, I HAVE eaten asparagus, but not every day LMAO.

Anyway, I'm just wondering if the strong odor has something to do with being paleo. My carbs are relatively high (65-85g/day) and my breath smells fine (believe my, my husband would tell me if it didn't). My urine used to not really smell like anything, but now it does, even when almost clear from my excessive water intake.

  • This is due to ketosis..I have it as well..I also often have to deal with metal mouth and brush my teeth all the time.
Not everyone has to be below 50 grams to be in ketosis..for some it comes with less than 80 grams

Thank you! I didn't want to throw the k-word (ketosis) around too frivilously. I'm glad that's what it sounds like--that's what I was hoping. It's kinda of embarrassing to pee at work, though, because I know people in other stalls can probably smell it too!

Are there any other signs you are in Ketosis? I think I have the weird pee smelling thing and am pretty low carb, although I don't track at the moment.

    I agree with anjelevil!!!!!

For the smell I love this stuff called Poo-pourri (mainly to get rid of #2 smells, but works well for the strong smelling pee too).

They have different scents (my fave is Heaven scent, but I'm loving the Santa poo-pourri too). They have a travel sized kit and larger ones. I just keep one at home and one in the bathroom at work. Two squirts and you're good to go (literally).

I got mine on Amazon and QVC pretty cheap.

It may change over time, and the smell should get less strong. I've been keto for about 14 months and I have no strange smells, unless I do eat asparagus. Even the bad breath thing isn't true for me, but I'm sure it helps that my gum disease has been cured by my Keto/Primal/Paleo lifestyle.

I also read somewhere that the bad breath is caused by eating too much protein (relative to your fat intake) when you are in ketosis and the protein is producing ketones (not just the fat burning). Anyone else heard that?

I don't know but obviously eating too much protein is not a good idea. Although I do see many low carb/keto types doing that even when it's supposed to be a fat-based diet. :noway:

Maybe that would explain breath problems? Because I certainly don't have that and i'm at large to max ketones almost every day.

Hmmm...interesting idea. Might be why my breath doesn't smell either.

This. When I first went into ketosis I also noticed a change in smell. Now, it seems back to normal and my max intake on any given day is less than 38g of carbs.

Apologies for being a bit off topic, but when you measure carbs (as in "less than 38g") to maintain Keto, do you use "Net Carbs" or total carbs?

Depends on the person you ask. I only track total carbs and sugar. For me, I try to stay under 40 grams of total carbs. Some people can probably go higher than that and still be ketogenic, and maybe I could too but I like the way I eat now so I don't want to mess with it.
