Strength training with arthritis

I've lost some weight with mostly cardio and diet and want to look at strength training. I did some upper body work with a trainer while preparing for the Tough Mudder earlier but now I want to see what else I can do.
Running is getting to be less of an option because of arthritis in my knees (I'm 49). Almost all lifting routines include squats/lunges and they are brutal on my knees.
Should I start with light weights and try to build endurance over time or try an alternate exercise? Deadlifts, rows, chest presses - all okay but I don't want to miss out on an important component.
