Have you ever met a Paleo person who smokes?
Do you think it's ok ("Paleo") to smoke Cannabis & tobacco in their raw state?
Correct me if I'm wrong but I don't think Paleolithic people smoked anything. Maybe a few trippy mushrooms or Peyote buttons, but not for recreation/spiritual reasons?
Thoughts?

After moving back to Nunavut, I kept falling off the wagon with smoking. So I was smoking during my 2.5 months of being Primal. But getting my health in order made the quitting easier. But being addicted to commercial cigarettes is not the same as using tobacco for spiritual purposes; in fact, it's an insult to the spirit of the plant to misuse it.
Yes, Paleolithic people used plants for a variety of purposes. Medicinal, spiritual, and for treatment of illness/pain. And yes, even to feel good/high. (Don't tell anyone, but magic mushrooms cured my mom's stomach cancer.) It seems totally logical (to me) to take advantage of nature's healing substances when they are needed but always in moderation and used with respect-which means within a strong culture with the guidance of shaman/healers. Now that so many of us are disconnected from nature, lacking spirituality, and traumatized, stressed and depressed we probably need healing more than ever.
It might be useful to know that Paleolithic people still exist, albeit fewer and fewer every year. You can learn amazing things from the few hunter/gatherer societies that are still around. Take advantage, get to know them, before they are all gone. They hold the answer to many of the problems we face today. You just have to reach out, ask, and LISTEN with an open mind.0 -
Strictly speaking, I'd say natural drug use is probably paleo, but I doubt it's healthy when done as often and in the amounts it's typically done today. Like with food, the wealth of modern society allows for great excess. Mass produced tobacco product, the likes of Skoal, Marlboro, and Camel, etc., are loaded with chemicals that are by no means paleo.
Having said that, I'd probably start smoking again, anyway, if it were cheaper or I were richer. I really did enjoy smoking (Lucky Strikes, all the way!) but it just got too expensive.0 -
It doesn't matter what you're smoking. Smoking in general is bad for your health. It really destroys your lungs. Google pictures of the lungs of smokers vs non-smokers. It's pretty scary.0

I would think smoking is not consistent with good health, but as a former smoker, I totally understand the addiction. When I smoked, I also had other unhealthy addictions though - energy drinks, tons of caffeine, etc.0

Very interesting input you guys. Thanks!0

Most primitive peoples have found various plants that can be burn and inhaled for various reasons. That being said, there's a difference between the occasional communal pipe around the fire (the old 'peace pipe' cliche) and going through a pack of cigarettes or couple of bongs a day. Now you are introducing carcinogens into your lungs on a regular basis.0 -

Interesting topic. I quit smoking.....regularly.....back in March, and have been following paleo since about June. In previous years I followed a vegetarian and then even a vegan lifestyle. Point being, I have long been interested in health and nutrition, but also enjoyed a love/hate relationship with smoking. It does seem contradictory, but I am human for better or worse. Honestly, I still smoke a few here and there when I'm enjoying a few drinks with friends. I use to be pretty hard on myself about it, but I think acceptance here is key. Imposing too many limitations on myself would be mentally unhealthy and who can enjoy good physical health with out a happy mind? Acceptance and moderation.0

Just repeating the anti-smoking propaganda really wasn't the point of the thread, I believe. There's a big difference between smoking commercially made cigarettes, a pack a day then using natural tobacco for spiritual purposes. Also, Inuit didn't smoke a few generations ago but had black lungs due to breathing in sea mammal oils that were burned in their dwellings to keep warm. I'm sure that keeping warm trumped getting black lungs. However, cancer was still an unknown illness among Inuit until recently.
There are many factors that affect cancer growth. Commercially made cigarettes are full of toxic materials that have nothing to do with the tobacco. These ingredients were added to improve burning (a cigarette that goes out easily means less profits) and increase addiction. I think that's criminal. Add to those toxins, a grain/sugar based processed food diet and you have a perfect recipe for illness. But smoking/injesting a plant on occasion, in a respectful and spiritual manner bears no comparison to commercial cigarette addiction.
Additionally, a healthy diet can really help offset the negative effects of other unhealthy lifestyle choices. I was still smoking when I started a ketogenic Primal lifestyle last year. I had huge health improvements long before I quit smoking. Of course, I was focussed on quitting smoking eventually and the healthy diet helped with all aspects of being successful. I had no cravings, lost weight, and have stayed quit. If you ask me which is more important healthy diet or not smoking I have NO hesitation to say: HEALTHY DIET. Though smoking commercial cigarettes is certainly something to work towards eliminating for sure.0 -
