The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) is looking at whether or not the flu vaccine is effective. Preliminary results indicate you'll get just as sick (with colds, flu, flu-like illnesses) if you got the vaccine than if you didn't. Why doesn't the vaccine work? In order to understand the answer, you'll need to understand some specifics about the flu vaccine and a bit about how immunity works.

The CDC looks at how well the flu vaccine works every year.
Each season researchers try to determine how well flu vaccines work to regularly assess and confirm the value of flu vaccination as a public health intervention. Study results about how well a flu vaccine works can vary based on study design, outcome(s) measured, population studied and the season in which the flu vaccine was studied. These differences can make it difficult to compare one study’s results with another’s.

They're pretty transparent on the CDC website. It's not some weird conspiracy.

I really hate the way all the drug stores and the media start pushing the flu shot about this time every year.

If people want to get a flu shot, fine. Most people know that flu shots are available without all the hype.

I just don't want to be nagged about the fact that I didn't get a flu shot and don't want one every time I turn on the TV or go in the drug store.

Flu shots are a HUGE profit maker for the drug store chains, or they would not push them so hard.

Of course you can get ill from flu like illnesses and colds and even other strains of the flu after a flu shot. The flu shot only works on the expected, most common varieties. It is not 100% effective, nothing is. It is also ineffective on colds, and the all encompassing category of "Flu like" illnesses. The flu shot is also ineffective on typhoid, Ebola, yellow fever and tiger attacks too.
