Dairy or no?

Can't decide if I want to add dairy back in or not. I miss having real milk in my coffee and real cheese on occasion with my weekly 1/2 bottle of vino! I am slightly reactive to it...like I have a threshold that if I cross, it ain't pretty but otherwise seem to be ok with a little bit. Hmmmmmm.......Do you do dairy or no?

If you can handle staying under that threshold (ie - you don't go nuts and eat a whole block of cheese if you have a bite), then there's not many reasons to at least experiment with dairy.

Odds are it's either the lactose and/or casein that you react to, so try introducing stuff that is low in either/both of these, first, such as hard cheeses.

Also, it might help to make sure you get your dairy from A2 cows, such as Jerseys, instead of predominantly A1 cows, such as Holsteins. Find local dairies and do some research on them to see which protein marker their herds have as primary. Many people find they can tolerate milk from A2 cows a lot better than that of A1 cows.

Introduce things slowly, and see how you react to them. Don't forget, too, that like other foods, reactions to dairy are just GI related. Check also for things like mood swings, and acne or other skin condition flare ups.

Thanks for the tips! Will def do some research.

While the wifey and I aren't philosophically adverse to cow dairy, we do avoid your situations by:

    - using coconut milk (canned, not beverage) as a coffee 'creamer';
    - sticking to primarily sheeps- and goats-milk cheeses, which are more easily digestible.
  • Personally,I react to dairy.
I never realised I had any issues with it until I did a whole 30.
Aside from the build up of mucus that's almost instant from dairy,it has a serious effect on my t.o.m
I get acne as well as become very hormonal.I don't get it at all if I have no dairy.
I would say if you can find raw cheeses you would be better off.
Also,I understand that older cheeses are better (blue cheese, etc).
Nothing like a glass of red and a good blue..yum..of course a very nice dark chocolate rounds that off quite well.
Oh how I miss those times!

Dairy is "iffy" and up to the individual according to Mark Sisson (Mark's Daily Apple) says it. Weston Price was not against it, but Cordain is. So who knows? A great substitute for milk is almond or almond/coconut milk. How they do it is beyond me, but it has virtually no macros. lol I like it for making protein shakes, to which I add regular coconut milk (like Goya brand) and some heavy cream. Once I'm done with this container of milk I'll use the almond/coconut milk exclusively. I still like full fat yogurt and cheeses, but I go easy on them because of the carbs.

Personally, I know that I get odd side effects from drinking milk and eating low quality cheese in particular. Like I feel like I need to clear my throat constantly and I definitely feel better without it. Goat cheese, sheep's cheese, etc. - those I seem fine with though, so once I'm done with my Whole30, I'll probably add them back in in small, occasional amounts. But not as a topping on things, if that makes sense. If I want some good cheese, I'm going to savor and enjoy a piece on occasion. That's about it.

I eat some dairy from time to time and take whey protein almost daily. You really have to gauge how your body takes it.

I was Primal for a year before giving up dairy for a month. I proved to myself that I do not "need" dairy and that my body actually does not like it at all. So I've stuck with the BP coffee instead of adding back cream (it has carageenan) but I do have a bit of cheese or sour cream occasionally. But dairy does cause some stomach upset, which I was totally unaware of before eliminating it. So, I have some because I love it, but I do think I'm healthier without it.

Edit: quality matters. If you can access raw, unpasteurized local milk products they may in fact be beneficial. I live in the Arctic so my only dairy is commercial crap from big producers. There's nothing healthy about Kraft cheese for instance and that's all I can access where I live.

I've never had any problems with diary. But I don't drink cow's milk because of the carbs but I do have heavy cream in my BP coffee. And cheese in my dishes occasionally. I've never been one for eating cheese and crackers but will have it. My problems are with wheat or gluten. I was thinking about not eating dairy at all to see if I notice anything out of the ordinary. But that may take a while. I'm very much into health benefits of a Primal/Paleo diet. I'm not fully primal yet, mainly very low carb. I am trying to "begin" to gradually eat this way, but it seems that the only main difference from how I'm eating now is I'll be eating a lot more veggies.

Same here. I don't seem to react poorly to dairy and I use the protein to bulk.
