Old bones and chest strength

I'm really struggling to progress with pushing exercises due to various aches and pains. A year ago I had a quad bike accident where I hit my chest and I think sustained an intercostal separation (self diagnosed from my ER nurse X-ray vision) and whilst its healing I'm finding bench pressing hard going. When I try to work on push ups instead my arthritic wrist lets me down and I can't progress past either knee push ups or bench push ups.

So should I just try and persevere with bench presses, is it worth buying those push-up handle things and should I just suck it up and stop whinging? I'm doing well with all my other lifts and I don't want to get out of balance with a weak front body.
