Take for pain?

Since I'm a recent Bypasser, I left the hospital with Hydrocodone RX. What do you all take for pain, like leg aches (I have) and headaches (I will have)...lol I'm hoping I'll be able to take other things in the future. I would imagine Tylenol, but maybe to soon for tender pouch. I hate to keep the RX med for everything, but my leg aches actually wake me during the night. I'll bring it up to my doctor too of course, but just wondering what y'all do?

I never took the liquid hydrocodone that was prescribed after leaving the hospital. I only used liquid Tylenol. I seldom take any pain meds, just refuse to get into that habit for personal reasons. I was told (not by my surgical team, but on MFP) that we aren't to take Ibuprofen or Aleve, though I have no clue why no Aleve. I know that everyone says Tylenol is the safe way to go. I imagine that the nsaids can irritate the pouch.
  • Haven't had surgery, yet, but was told no Aleve or Motrin...they can both cause irritation to the pouch and/or bleeding. Doctor said only take prescribed pain medicine or liquid tylenol.
  • One more thing....also told that headaches and leg cramps can be from dehydration...so drink more water...

I second what everyone above has said. No NSAIDS of any type, ever for bypass patients. I'm not sure about for sleeve or banders.

Tylenol is the only safe thing for over the counter pain relief. Tylenol with codeine or tramadol is what most folks get for prescription pain meds.

Thanks everyone! I will be getting some liquid tylenol. I don't like taking the Hydrocodone either. That's scary about the leg cramps, because I feel like I'm drinking so much already that my stomach could bust. Granted not more than 8 cups a day, but that's a lot for me.

Sometimes the leg cramps are from low magnesium also. If they persist and you don't think you are dehydrated, I'd check with your doctor.

For leg cramps a kale, banana, protein smoothie really helps me, kale is really high in both magnesium and potassium. Right after surgery, I was low in magnesium and used a RX. Now I take an OTCmagnesium supplement.,helps with constipation, and calcium absorption.

Part of the reason for no NSAIDs ever, is that it really can cause severe bleeding in the part of the stomach closed off. If an ulcer or bleeding develops, the only way to know (usually an emergency) is to open you up surgically to look. Happened to a friend with 2 Motrin,

leg cramps can also be caused by anemia (iron/vitamin d deficiency) so make sure you are taking all your vitamins. I was told to stop taking iron for first month after surgery, so check with your doctor first!

I'd ordered some liquid Tylenol, and I have been taking my vitamins. I only had to take the Hydrocodone 1 through the night to get back to sleep. I'll be talking with the Dr's office tomorrow.

    Thanks again! :)
