My 10k saga

Yesterday was supposed to be my first running 10k in over a decade. Last one I ran was the Peachtree in July of 2003. However my husband and I double booked. He ended up signing up for the attached half marathon with the base's running team. So we thought no problem we'll get a sitter. First we tried my Mom, but she had out of town plans at the Ft Worth Octoberfest. Then we tried one of hubby's friends. They have kids roughly the same age as ours. They said yes. Until the Wed before the race, when he got scheduled for surgery on Thursday. So we scrambled to find another sitter. Located one (next door neighbor) and thought we were good. Confirmed on Saturday that they could do it.

Sunday morning they don't show up. I kicked hubby out the door to do his team half. And waited hoping she would get there and I could hurry and make it at the last minute. Nope. So no official 10k for me. So no race time to submit to Disney to move up in the corrals.

BUT instead of using this as a reason to blow off that day's run or even running in general. I got out that evening and ran my 10k by myself. So my unofficial time is 1:22:54. I think I might have done it faster in the "real" 10k because of the excitement but since that one had two huge hills and my road does not I might not have. Either way I broke my Good and Great goals for the race and came pretty close to my The Stars Aligned goal. Yay me!!

Great job just getting out there. It must have been a huge disappointment for you! I know I would have nearly cried! Finding a reliable sitter that I actually trust is incredibly difficult! Sorry yours flaked out on you!

That's such a pity you missed getting your official 10k timing - hope the neighbour doesn't need a favour anytime soon!

But massive kudos for going out and running it yourself later on - not sure I could pulled myself out of the doldrums to do that! :)

I'm impressed that you went out anyway. When is your Disney run?

I'm running the Tinkerbell in January. I walked the inaugural in 2012? Or maybe it was 2011. And then I did the Princess at Disney World this February. But this will be my first one running. The cut off for the corral upgrades is the 10th of Nov for the Tink so I'm stuck in the last corral but I'll be fine. If I can make it walking I can make it running.

And I find that being stubborn as an ox is an excellent cure for the doldrums. Besides if I stayed inside and moped I'd never get any better at this game. I took Monday off as a rest day and today I did 4 miles. Going to see if I can break into the 12 minute mile pace range as a steady thing. I make it down there once every great while but I usually hover right around 13:20. Which is 4 minutes/mile faster then my walking pace  And for the record I consider a 12:59 part of the range...... I figure the pace I hold steady in December will be my race pace in January.

Well done on trying it out on your own in the end OP, that must have been beyond disappoingting for you when they didn't show up :(

Out of interest, did you ever find out why they didn't turn up?

I was just about to ask the same question!

How disappointing after you worked so hard to find a sitter. But great job going out and getting in your run later anyway.
