Stairs: How do you do it?

Well, let's get it out of the way, "One Step At A Time!".
So seriously, walking up and down stairs can get pretty plain and boring. Here are a few things I do to make things more interesting/beneficial.
<What my two flight stairwell looks like. Goes from Basement to 3rd floor>
1. I like to alternate (going up) between stepping on every and every other step per trip.
2. While still breathing I tense my core between landings, resting the core at each landing and tensing again on the first step. (Tip from Shaun T.)
3. I never run down the stairs. I'd like to make it back to my desk.
4. Smile at every person you pass. (this is a personal thing for me because I have been informed that I have project an angry demeanor)
Thats just a few for me. I'm interested in what others do during thier manual stair climbing moments.

These are great!
I'm in a hospital that goes from ground to the "penthouse" (fancy name for mechanical room) on the 8th floor.
I work on the ground floor and take one flight of stairs to get to the first floor. On the way to the stairwell that goes from first to the penthouse, I pass a flight that goes from 1st to 3rd, so I take those up and back down first. Then I pass another flight that only goes from 1st to 2nd, and that one is BORING so I usually skip it and hit the 1st-8th stairwell.
I keep my iPod with me during the day and keep the music going. Finding that Pearl Jam's most recent release keeps a little hip hop in my step.
I try and kind of jog as far up as I can, then rest a bit on the landing on the numbered floors, then just keep walking up them until I hit 8 and then walk back down. I never run down, because I'm the clumsy girl, and it would be my luck to face plant between 4th and 5th where nobody EVER goes. I'm getting better. I can jog from 1st halfway to 3rd, and then speed-walk the rest of the way.
I will absolutely try the core tensing between landings. What a great suggestion!
I have a fitbit, which helps keep track of the number of flights I've climbed. A couple weeks ago I did 62, but couldn't go again the next day, LOL...0 -
Unfortunately I don't have anywhere to do stairs other than at the gym on the machine - but a way I try to keep from getting bored on the machine is through 5-minute cycles - 2 minutes of walking just straight one step at a time, 1 minute sideways, 1 minute sideways on the other side, then 1 minute skipping a step. It actually make the workout go by faster too.0

We have four floors total. I think on each landing every other time I am going to jog up the stairs and do squats or lunges until i'm at the top. Otherwise, yes, it gets super boring. Sideways might be a good option0

I like the sideways and skipping a step options. I might have to try that out today.0

Ok, I need help on this one, "sideways"? I can kinda see it on a stair stepper, but on actual stairs I'm having a harder time.Am I right to see it as the same concept of sidestepping for like basketball/football footwork drills?0

I'm going to try it at 2:00 and will let you know how/if it worked.
If you don't hear back from me, assume I've tripped over my own feet and plummeted to my death, or at the very least, temporary incapacitation. :bigsmile:0 -
Good luck Julie!! Don't fall! haha
Sideways, just turn to the side and step one leg over the other. You can hold onto the railing.0 -
I've only got access to 15 steps, and since I'm working on strengthening core, I threw on a weighted backpack with 7 kilos in it, and did a set to try it out. It was great. I just got back from my evening workout, so I don't need to do anything more tonight, but it will be on my list for my mini workouts tomorrow.0

Ok...I did it...It is a LOT more work than just going up straight (and it hurts so good), so I am going to do those and alternate.
Managed 30 floors today. Shooting for more tomorrow because Wednesday is generally an active rest day for me.0 -
Sideways wasn't as complicated as I thought. However, they have made me break my cardinal rule of no sweating at work...0

This is Texas. The land is flat. There are no stairs at work. I'm a flatlander.0
