Adjusting Goals for Diabetic

Hi,
I was just diagnosed 5 days ago and I read somewhere on here that you can adjust your goals to fit a diabetic diet. Does anyone know how much grams of sugar, how much carbs, much protien and much fat a diabetic should have per day? I also started on metformin and i've lost 4 pounds since monday, that's rare for me.

I don't know how to adjust the goals, I've wondered that myself. I was told metformin could aid in weight loss, but it didn't for me. Glad it is helping you! But I hope it's not from upset stomach. If it is, that should level off after your body adjusts to it. If not, you may need a different medication.

Under Home-Goals-Change Goals-Custom. I changed mine to 30% carbs, 30% protein, 40% fat for a lower carb, higher fat diet. I haven't been to a doctor yet, just trying to maintain under 120 bg on my own so I can't help you out on the meds part. Hope this helps.

    Hi Carmi,

I just got my diagnosis for type 2 on 10/21/13. Scary times. I approached my doctor a month before and demanded metformin to try and prevent the diagnosis, but it was too little too late. My wife suffers from PCOS and has been on Metformin for over 4 years now. She gave me good advice to take half a dose for a week to let your body get use to it due to stomach issues. But even then they will still happen.

You're best following your doctors or nutritionist's instructions on diet and nutrients. They should have either referred you to a Diabetes nutritionist to work up a meal plan for you, or given you literature that has the basic information in it.

As for the metformin … I've been on it for 10 years and it never helped me to lose weight. It does however cause upset tummy if taken on an empty stomach, for me. (That event does lead to a little bit of weight loss. ) To avoid tummy issues, I take my metformin with my meal.

    Good Luck
