The problem with the HFCS battle is that corn is heavily, heavily subsidized, and one of the major lobby groups is the Corn Growers Association. I looked it up one time and found that we grow enough corn to not only supply our food, but also feed everyone in the Third World nation, and still have enough left over to make Ethanol fuel (corn is the least efficient stock for Ethanol fuel production, btw) and support a market of using corn, straight up, for fuel (seriously, look up "corn burning furnace," I kid you not, there's a fairly large market, and it's actually cheaper to do that in some places, depending on gas/electric prices). That's how much corn we grow.
The way I look at this trans fat thing is that it's an eye-opener to the fact that a lot of the products that list "0g trans fat" really aren't. That's technically an issue with what constitutes "0" in our nutrition labeling, but when "no amount healthy," there's a high cost to rounding down.0
