This is a journal that talks about the strain of your spinal load from the type of position you are in during squatting. To sum it up, if you are upright, the less strain it is on your lower back.
Front squat/zercher squat would be the ideal variation of a squat for those with lumbar problems such as myself.

Thanks for posting, liking the look of the zercher and will give it a try. I'm currently on goblet squats which seem to be fine for my mashed disc.0

This was the first biomechanic study I have looked up, there have been alot of comments on how front squats and zercher squats can be performed on people with lumbar problems.0
