Pinned threads

So, the pinned challenge threads at the top of this group are old. Is there any way to get them un-pinned and maybe start a new december start challenge? My motivation and I are looking for, um... some actual motivation rather than the faking it we have been doing, and you lot are pretty inspirational.

This is an old group that got revived and the moderators don't respond to our pleas for tweaks....

Feel free to join in our inspiration!

Me, too. I don't seem to have a lot of motivation these past 2 weeks. I could use a challenge, I think.

Maybe we could do "The 12 miles of Christmas"?

That sounds very festive. What are the 12 miles of Christmas?

I'm trying to come up with something. Maybe the "10 Lords a Leaping" could be fartleks?

Or there could be the 12ks of Christmas.

Or 12 hours of running in December.

Twelve drummers drumming - Cheer for another runner during a race
Eleven pipers piping - Run without any electronics
Ten lords a-leaping - Do 10 strides or fartleks during a run
Nine ladies dancing - Do a tempo run for at least 9 minutes
Eight maids a-milking - Volunteer at a water station during a run
Seven swans a-swimming - Cross train 7 days
Six geese a-laying - Do yoga, get a massage or foam roll six times.
Five golden rings - Do a track workout of at least a mile and a quarter (or 2000 meters)
Four calling birds - Sing "Good King Wenceslaus" or an equivalent length ballad during a long run
Three French hens - Eat crepes or french toast after a run
Two turtle doves - Run with a friend
And a partridge in a pear tree - Eat a piece of fruit every day

    I could handle this one!
Four calling birds - Sing "Good King Wenceslaus" or an equivalent length ballad during a long run
Completely Off Topic, but the original english lyrics are Four colly birds (blackbirds)

Maybe we could go up a hill four times. Yes, absolutely no connection to calling birds, colly birds, or blackbirds, but it does have to do with four and birds do go up.

It's our own rules, so I'd call it the hoilday challenge and start it ....
on the 19th or 20th giving it 6 weeks
on the 16th if someone has a race they want to volunteer or cheer in this coming weekend
on the 27th just before Thanksgiving and giving it 5 weeks

In general, that's the kind of logic I used. :)

If anybody wants to do something like this, we should work out "rules" that work for everybody...since Petra is on a treadmill and a lot of people don't necessarily have access to a track, we should figure out reasonable variations...and I don't want to make the assumption that everybody wants to relate this to a Christian holiday. I was just trying to come up with a "December Challenge" to make that dead thread relevant again.

Maybe Thanksgiving (irrelevant American holiday) to New Years?

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this one.

Maybe, for us treadmillers, a "hill" could be 2 or 3 inclines above the incline that we normally run on? If the challenge is specific, a steep hill could be 3 inclines above normal, a medium hill, 2 inclines above, a slight hill 1 incline above. Distance or time could also be specified (ie: on the 3rd run up a slight hill for 3 minutes, if time is specified, or for 0.5K, if distance is specified).

ETA: if the original moderators aren't around to unpin the threads, could we ask MFP to do so?

My December will be focused on recovery but I'll definitely be watching everyone's progress. This is what I'll be doing (the half-marathon recovery plan):

That is awesome, Tim! I was looking for a half-marathon recovery plan, but most of what I found kind of pooh-poohed it or was obviously a re-tread of Galloway's marathon recovery plan.

I also peeked at Coach Jenny's other plans. I like the way they are time-based.

I think it will be nice to take a breather and not worry about building up distance. I'll start the plan the first week of December so I'll have over a week of no running if my last run is the Thanksgiving race.

That's what I was planning on doing. Start easy with a bicycle on the Tues/Wednesday after the race and maybe work in some strength training later that week.

Some variations as Varda was discussing
Twelve drummers drumming - Cheer for another runner during a race
We could just have cheer for another runner, it doesn't have to be during a race. Cheering for your kid getting out and running. Encourage the healthy activity. Or give some encouraging words or high fives to someone out in the cold/rain/etc getting their run in. Just do something positive to encourage someone else in their running endeavor.
Eleven pipers piping - Run without any electronics
Don't know that this needs a variation
Ten lords a-leaping - Do 10 strides or fartleks during a run
Allow 10 intervals on the treadmill?
Nine ladies dancing - Do a tempo run for at least 9 minutes
That should be doable for all
Eight maids a-milking - Volunteer at a water station during a run
    Hmmmmm!
Seven swans a-swimming - Cross train 7 days
Six geese a-laying - Do yoga, get a massage or foam roll six times.
    No change necessary
Five golden rings - Do a track workout of at least a mile and a quarter (or 2000 meters)
Or run that much on the treadmill and imagine a track?

Four calling birds - Four times up (running) and down (walking) a hill or the equivalent (parking garage; inclined treadmill). Since the hill even if real, will vary in height and length, people can make their hill what they want.
Three French hens - Eat crepes or french toast after a run
Eat three crepes, three pieces of french toast, or three eggs or egg whites after a run or runs. All three don't have to be after the same run if you want to space them out. That should fit with any diet.
Two turtle doves - Run with a friend
Run and Friend can have a broad interpretation. For example: my dog is my friend; or you and your friend run at the same time, but perhaps in different locations
And a partridge in a pear tree - Eat a piece of fruit every day
Eat a piece of fruit each day that you completed or partially completed one of the other "days"

Ha! I have just seen that you guys have grabbed this and ru... No. I can't go with this pun.

I am definitely up for whatever set of challenges you come up with. I might have to change the eggs to Cadbury Creme Eggs though (allergies- what a shame), and there are no organised races that I can find anywhere locally until spring appears, though I might not be looking in the right places.

From the 2nd of December until the end of January my work goes mental. 11 or 12 hours a day 6 days a week. I will have Wednesdays off (which means christmas day and new years day count as my "days off") but otherwise I am am going to have to restructure to fit in running. The current plan is to try to go out during my (4.30 - 5.30 pm ish) dinner breaks, and to join a gym local to work for the inevitable atrocious weather.

Which is to say, Yes! Challenge me! I look forward to trying to work them in.

I'm not sure who to ask. However, if you all really want this to happen, I can see if we can have existing group members made moderators of this group.

Eight maids a-milking - Volunteer at a water station during a run
    Hmmmmm!

How about a run with a coffee/hot chocolate/tea break built in?

Like the one I do to Kroger to pick up a Starbucks, then back home. Those are THE BEST.

You can bring a thermos if you don't have a good rest stop otherwise.
