I feel like a failure, I've been on my 2 week liquid diet before surgery (november 21st) and the first 4 days I totally got anxious and weird and totally had "last supper syndrom" Now dont get me wrong I didnt eat everything in sight like a maniac, I just ate what I wanted to for Dinner only, breakfast and lunch stood liquids, but the dinners weren't all too healthy, I know that for a complete fact. I feel like I messed up so badly. I'm on the 5th day and I started over I will not give into bad temptations because of the though of never eating certain foods again cause thats just silly, but my question is..is my surgery going to be okay? I lost 5 pounds even though those 4 days were awful.

You probably didn't do as bad as you think. You are lucky to be able to have one meal per day. My doctor required 2 weeks of liquids prior to my surgery.
It is good for you to get back on your program...After surgery, most physicians require at least a week of liquid diets to let your new pouch heal. I had gastric bypass & my doctor required 3 weeks of liquids before I was able to add moist/mushy foods.
It is better for you to try to stick with the plan so that your surgery & healing will go well.
Good luck and let us know how things go.0 -
thank you so much this made me feel so much better0

Allosnsy, that week of liquid diet was honestly the hardest part of the entire surgical process for me. Your body is going though a big time carb crash during that liquid process and for me I felt like I was just walking in a total fog.
You will get though it. Compared to the rest of your healthy life this is just a small time.0 -
You'll be fine I only had to do the liquid diet 24 hours before surgery and that was it. I ate normally up to the day before0

Oh thank goodness that just took a big stress off of me haha0

I didn't go 'crazy' during my last two weeks of liquid! But I rationalized that I could HAVE liquid! So my last few days included ice cream parlor chocolate 'frappes' (ice cream shakes). I knew I would probably NEVER have my most favorite ice cream drink again, so I decided that I would indulge. They were probably over 500 cal/drink. I did not care - I was either in mourning or making a memory!.
Long story short... I lived to tell about it. I relished in the fact that I was able to say good by to that style of eating and I had no remorse. I didn't tell my surgeon - and 3 days later, I had my surgery.
You are human - you had your 'last' fling. Now go enjoy -> the rest of your life. :drinker:

First off -- YAY for getting to the liquid diet stage!! That mean you are sooooo close to your surgery date
The whole purpose of the liquid diet (my understanding from my program, anyway) is to shrink your liver to make your surgery easier and reduce the risk factor. They have to lift your liver up off your stomach for the surgery, so the smaller the liver the better.
Although, I don't think you have done any permanent damage with your choices , I do think it is good that you have restarted yourself. I was allowed one meal a day (as long as it was under 300 calories) and as many raw veggies as I wanted in conjunction to my protien shakes for my two week liquid diet. I guess every program is different :flowerforyou:
The mourning and reaction to loss of being able to eat what and however much you want is totally normal, but it is something you want to get in check. It will be a long hard road if you are constantly feeling deprived because you can't have whatever you want. I know lots of people who ate that one last meal so they could enjoy it one last time. I made the choice to just give it up....sugar that is. When I recevied a sugery date, I said "no more. If I can't have it after surgery, I don't want it now." By the time my surgery rolled around it had been 5 months, and I was no longer craving the sugar. I was a serious sugar junkie. One last meal of chocolate would have restarted all that over again!
You are doing great. Try to remember that this part is a rite of passage denied to many. These two weeks prepare you for a change in your life that you will never regret. And, the sacrifice of having only liquids is truly a teeny tiny price to pay for years and years wonderful new experiences you will have after your surgery!0 -
for me I felt like I was just walking in a total fog.
On a side note -- I also felt like this.
I honestly could not function and sometimes found myself without the ability to remember why I was doing what I was doing (such as walking down a hall, going up the stairs, etc....) I called my Dr and he said the protien shakes I was using (EAS Advantage from SAMs Club) were so low in calories that the 3 I was drinking were only providing me with less than 400 calories a day. That, plus my one meal of under 300 calories, was topping me out at less than 700 for the day. My body couldn't function, so I was advised to add another 300 calories (in either food or liquids).
The liquid diet serves a great purpose, but it is NOT designed to put you in Zombie Land! Please don't ever hesitate to call the Dr if you feel something is not right with anything they advise you to do. We are all so different and our bodies are not rubber stamped the same! Thanks -- rjcmi -- for pointing this out!!0 -
Thank you everyone so so much0

I'm on the pre-op diet right now myself (surgery Nov. 20th). Mine consists of three protein shakes, a lean cuisine-type dinner and a cup of vegetables. I have never wanted vegetables as much as I do now, I hate the protein shakes. I felt guilty last night because I ate more than a cup of vegetables. I never thought I'd feel guilty for eating vegetables!0

Last Supper Syndrome...I had it too. As soon as I hit that last 6 month nutrition class and found out my insurance was a "go, I lost most of my willpower temporarily. I think I actually gained a few pounds! Then, I had only clear liquids for one week prior to surgery. I lost about 10 pounds from that. The second or third day were hard, but after that it got strangely easy. No real tummy growls or cravings at that point. I was strict once I did the liquids, mainly because not following it closely could have caused complications or a cancellation of my surgery. I accidentally swallowed a small piece of gum about a week before and freaked out! I'm two-weeks post surgery now and doing fine with keeping on track. It's kind of weird I can watch other people eat foods I used to eat, I can recognize that it smells good or looks good, but I really don't have an appetite for anything. I haven't been tempted at all. I think alot of people go through the pre-surgery last supper thing, but if you're this far in the process, you're obviously committed to it. Don't be so hard on yourself. Good Luck0

My doctor gave us a "cheat option" for those that couldn't stick with full liquid. I didn't end up using it, but essentially you could have 3 oz white meat/fish and small salad for one of your meals. So I think there is probably no need for panic, but it is better to stick to the plan your doctor gave you.0
