Body under stress?

Hi,

Since stopping my runs and focusing on Strength training in 1 month all my fingernails have grown back stronger and are actually growing. They had been soft and flaky for some time prior to stopping my runs. From this I am presuming that I was not giving my body enough nutrients to cope with all that cardio and it may have been cannibalising itself? I eat on average 2000 calories a day but my TDEE is around 2500 and can go to 3000 when runs are included.

I have come to realise that whilst cardio is awesome for heart health, if you do not fuel yourself properly it will be of no good to other body parts.

I am planning to start doing 2 x 5km runs per week (I miss my chill out time where it is just me and the open road)) but I will be making sure I fuel up for it.

Eat more to fuel the body!

Good call and discovery before it was worse. If you had the ability to compare the workouts, they would be better too probably. It will be interesting to see how much faster you are now.

That was the body adapting to not getting enough intake for your level of activity.

It can slow down higher level metabolism functions, like regrowth of skin, nails, hair, in order to leave more calories for the base functions that must be done.
You likely also had adaptions to your daily activity, studies have shown the body will slow down daily movements that add up.

So what perhaps was say a TDEE of 2500 when not under a deficit, became 2200 under extreme deficit. So while you thought you were doing say a 500 cal workout each day, the body stopped doing 300 cal's worth of daily activity - meaning you actually only added on 200 extra daily from the exercise.

To simply answer your question, I would say YES! Start with the 3000 on days you run. Try that about 4 weeks. Keep us up dated!
Always do the activities you love!! The main part is fueling your body for WHATEVER activity you do!
