So I'm pretty sure I have a broken ankle

Ate it on some wet stairs tonight, and yes I know I should have gone on to the ER but I didn't and so I have to wait until tomorrow to get the official damage report (I'm pretty sure it will read "expensive")
And what was my first thought? I can't !@#$%^& run for a while! I guess that's a success story, because there was a time I'd have thought it was a darned good excuse. But seriously, I'm really disappointed that I ran two miles yesterday and I can't even walk to the damn kitchen right now. Grrrrrrr.

Did you eat it while running up the stairs? If so...then hate to say it, but your first running injury is kind of a special moment. Yes it sucks, and it hurts, and probably costs a good bit of money depending on how your insurance is. But at the same time you just got something that every other runner here will get too...a running injury. Bitter sweet isn't it? lol
Relax and take a deep breath and go to the hospital and get it worked on. When they set you up with a physical therapist be honest with them and tell them you were working on running, what week you were and how often. Good PTs will keep that in mind and work to get you to at least restarting week one. Start your research now, and find a good PT, preferably a PT who just so happens to run as well. Ask around your running store or the local running club and they will hook you up with good ones.
If you are part of a gym, then look around the cardio area. This might sound weird, but if they have a hand bike there use it. It is a good form of cross training for those with seriously injuried legs. It will help maintain a bit of the aerobic fitness you have gained from running. You will still have to start slow when you come back due to muscular systems, but at least you can sort of keep your cardio system in check this way.0 -
I'm sorry about your injury. The great thing about running is that you have something to think about besides the pain: you can fume about how you're not running!
It will be ok. You will run again. These things happen to the best of us. C25k is a nice onboarding from an extended time off, but if you're up to two miles, you might not even have to do that if it's only a few weeks that you're off.0 -
Thanks for the kind words. I guess it's been a while since I updated. Turns out my fibula was broken in two places just above the ankle, but all the ligaments and stuff more or less okay. I've got another 2ish weeks in an air cast/walking boot, then can start attempting to run again in another 2 weeks after that if all continues to heal as it should.
I clearly won't be picking up right where I left off, but I'm looking forward to seeing what I can still do, especially now that I've gotten the go ahead to start doing some low impact stuff in the gym again. I was planning to train for a tri this spring so it's a good excuse to get some extra pool time in!0 -

Yikes! That sounds painful. Here's to a speedy recovery!0
