Gym or at Home

This is my first post in this group. I guess I'm sorta a newbie.
I now understand the importance of making the effort to maintain a LBM while losing weight. It's not just about the scale (I'm learning). For this it is important to lift weights. I have NO experience with weights. I have children so that's something I think about as well. Sometimes it is easier to workout at home than at the gym however there are more tools at the gym. Is it worthwhile to go to a gym or can you do your resistance training at home?

I built a gym.. in my home
honestly, it didn't cost me that much and what I would spend a year going to a gym, I spent less getting the stuff I needed.0 -
First of all depending on your goals you do not necessarily have to lift weights.
You should be doing some form of resistance training, ideally, to help retain muscle during energy restriction, but that doesn't necessarily have to be weight training depending on your goals.
You could consider looking into body-weight training programs such as You Are Your Own Gym or Convict Conditioning as alternative methods.
You can also consider getting a home gym.
I have a decent set-up at home but I prefer training in the gym so I do most of my training there.0 -
I think you could get started at home without any difficulty. You can get a kindle book called 'you are your own gym' which will get you going (surprising what you can do just moving your own weight. You can also get cheapish stuff or go for a multigym. I've gone for kettle bells and a barbell. I don't use these much at the moment because I do go to a gym though. I have a supportive wife (Who is also getting fit) and we take it in turns. I like the idea of moving away out of home to do it - I think psychologically it is good for me. I have the stuff in the cupboard for when I can't get out though.
Good luck.0 -

I'm doing an at home program now, by the author of You Are Your Own Gym-Body By You (Mark Lauren) and LOVE it! I'll be doing YAYOG next I'm a month in and already see a difference!0 -
I've never lifted in a gym, except for powerlifting competitions. 100% of my training is at home. If you are self motivating and don't need people around you to push you, it's fantastic. You work out when you want, at your own pace, can't beat it.0

Thank you all for your great responses.
I immediately went to check out bodyweight lifting as suggested. I ordered one of their dvds. I think it's yayog which Twix mentioned.
I have absolutely no strength (slight exaggeration but you get the idea). My goal is to increase lean mass and burn fat, as well as lose lbs of course. I also have hypothyroid so I'm trying to help my metabolism oh and may I add that I'm short :ohwell: and I'm jealous of taller ladies that get to eat more.
I'm tired of the confusing information out there. I just want to be lean, fit and beautiful. I deserve it.0 -
