Hello there! My name is Jena(pronounced gina) I have completed 3 of the 12 classes required by my ins provider, we will resume after the holidays and I can't wait! lol
It is a really good class and I went in thinking I am for sure getting the Sleeve but after hearing a few details about RNY I am starting to lean that way.
I was curious for those of you that have already been in the decision phase, what were some of the reasons you choose whichever procedure you choose???
Hope you are all enjoying time with your family & friends and losing weight! :drinker:

There were a lot more statistics about RNY success and risks because it has been around longer, so I felt more comfortable doing RNY. Also, my surgeon primarily did RNY and so I figured the risks decreased if I got the surgery he did more often.0

I chose sleeve surgery because I didn't want the issues of malabsorption and dumping that come with other surgeries. I feel the sleeve is less invasive, too. I made the decision with input from my surgeon, who performs all types of WLS. I had my sleeve surgery on Oct. 9th and I am doing great, very happy with my decision!0

I, too, was open to both. My surgeon recommended the RNY as the best for diabetics, and for my tendancy to overdo on carbs. I had my surgery in July and all is going well. Immediately after surgery I decreased my diabetes meds, and as of the week before Thanksgiving I am off of all of them! Everyone's decision is their own, good for you for doing your research.0

I was sleeved in October this year. Ditto didn't want the malabsorption issues and dumping that's more prevalent with R/Y. Also, it seems like R&Y folks, the ones I know personally, have more issues eating certain foods, from bread, rice and pasta, to fruit skins and steak. I'm 2.5 months out and have not had any issues with different types of food having tried all of the above in small amounts so far. I FEEL better on softer, moist proteins, but I've not found anything totally off limits which I like. I never wanted anything other than to live like a "normal" thin person, eating small portions and occasionally indulging in a favorite.0

I did GB because for me, if it was just a matter of watching what I eat and portions, I wouldn't need surgery at all. I've been dieting all my life, manage to lose it, then slowly gain it back (and more) for one reason or another. I needed to do something drastic, and something that could not be reversed. I didn't want the safety net of still being able to eat what I wanted, even in smaller portions. My surgeon felt GB was my best bet, the "gold standard" of WLS, so to speak. Believe me, with the holidays here I do sometimes think how great it would be to have some cookies or appetizers, etc. My husband just unwrapped and thawed our wedding cake, and ate it alone for our 1 year anniversary. (He said it was delicious . Whatever you choose, be honest with yourself and realistic about what's right for you. I'm sure you'll do great!0
